Jeez...

So tonight at around 11PM there came what sounded like two very sharp knocks on the front door, making me and the cat very wary. I tried to look out the peephole and didn't see anything because it's too high in the door for my short self, and decided not to answer the door, because hey - it's way too late.

And then a couple of minutes later, again, only louder, scaring the hell out of me and the cat. That last time something like this had happened - in my previous apartmetn complex - some drunk person had barrelled into the parking lot and smashed up several cars, and some guy was running around trying to find out whose cars they were and let them know what happend. But now I was just angry at how loud the damn knocks were and after looking out the peephole again and not seeing anything, wrenched the door open, to ... nothing.

Which, in a way, was slightly more freaky than haveing someone there. I'm thinking the guy in the apartment above me was dropping heavy things in the area of the apartment right near the front door. Because it's either that or some sort of pissed-off discorporate entity and seeing as how I'm a skeptic... well, now.

It still took me like fifteen minutes for my hands to stop trembling, but both I and the cat have calmed down now. It's pretty amazing how something as stupid as this can affect you. I'm pretty glad i opened the door anyway, because I would have been even more nervous thinking that there was someone there trying to get in.

I really need to get around to asking the apartment if it's feasible for them to lower the peephole or put another one in. I don't want to drag a footstool to the door and look out because when poeple selling magazines and stuff like that come by, if they hear anything on the other side of the door, they'll sit there and knock until you answer it.

I actually think I'd have trouble living without roommates because I get freaked out by noises at night.

And stupid peepholes made for tall people. Ours isn't too tall, luckily, although I do have to stand on tiptoe.

I've been getting knocks late at night too. I never answer them, but usually there's some kind of propaganda on my doorstep when I check later.

I just now noticed that my front door has no peephole.

...obviously, I don't get much use out of them. ;P

They do put those peepholes up fairly high. My landlord will rent to anybody (which is how I came to live here). Nice guy, but... Our building has a secure entrance but people leave crap in the door so it won't lock. I just keep my door locked and know where all my sharp instruments are if I need them. ;)
Sometimes I wish the propaganda people were able to come inside the building. I miss playing with them. Bwwwahahahahaa!

:O
I would have been most freaked out. At my old apartment I had this guy who thought he could 'charm' me and would knock on my door half naked and drunk. I answered the first time then never. again. He also cornered me once in the laundry room. He was sooooo hurt that I threatened to fork him if he EVER tried making contact with me again. So hurt, in fact, that he showed up drunk, half-naked and with flowers a couple days later. I spoke to the landlords and they felt I was blowing it out of proportion. I lived in fear for months until he finally moved out.

I hope your landlords move the peephole lower. They are invaluable!

I'm glad you're ok.

But obviously the solution is shown in Veronica Mars. Stick a small camera into the peephole with a feed to your computer. That way you can check without even having to get up! And you know it can't be too expensive since Veronica can get all that equipment despite not having much money.
