We managed to get the roofer to come by--he was looking at another house nearby and squeezed us in at lunchtime. He was, of course, not shaking hands. :)
Anyway, it turns out the leak is caused by one of the original roofers screwing up when nailing shingles down and not fixing it, which contributed to the dreaded nail pop (a roofing nail working its way up, leaving a hole), which led to water getting in if the wind was in the exact right direction.* It had been happening long enough that a small part of the wood underneath the shingles was rotten--he took photos, and we could see the dent, plus![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
myrialux had seen it from underneath in the attic, and poked it, too. Eventually it leaked, and it finally leaked enough to come down through the hole that one of the speakers was in.**
Assuming the weather doesn't delay them, they'll be out next week to fix it, plus a few other spots where he noticed other nails going in wrong. (As he said: the original guy nailing them was hungry, or new, or hurrying, or just didn't care.) All in all, the total quote was less than we feared, and nowhere near our deductible, so we're fine with it.

**Yes there are speakers in our ceiling. We have never hooked them up, because our taste in music is different enough that we just listen using headphones.
