So...
edit: I've got 3 people giving it a pass right now, so no need for more. Thank you!
I have now finished my first major editing pass through The Thing and am at the point where it needs to be read by eyes other than those who I've talked to about the world and characters, if anyone would like to volunteer. (Can work out a swap, or a discount on a book cover, or some such.)
It's fantasy, rounds up to 26K and now has a title....

DEADFALL
“You may go, Warden.” Calli willed herself not to react when the Academy warden ignored her. He sniffed doubtfully at the scruffy mercenary he’d guided through the university complex to Calli’s tiny study in the Department of Esoteric Sciences.
“No trouble for me to stay. You never know with these types, miss.”
“That’s Assistant Researcher,” said Calli automatically. “The Guildmaster dispatched him in answer to my request for an escort. I doubt he’ll be pillaging much here. You may, as I said, go. Thank you.”
“As you say, miss.” The warden heaved a sigh and abandoned Calli to her fate with a parting glare at the mercenary clearly meant to impress upon him that if there was any attempt at pillaging or suchlike, someone was going to answer for it.
The mercenary in question waited impassively beside the doorway, disreputable hat in hands, completely failing to pillage, ravage, or even loot Calli’s study.
