It most reminds me of this excellent book called Fashionable Food: Seven Decades of Food Fads (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0025757059/qid=1128959852/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/102-7538638-3088919?v=glance&s=books&n=507846), which is all about each decade's awful foods. And it's funny as hell reading through it, and you're laughing at all the horrible recipes that people ate and then you hit one of your own favorite recipes. XD (For Mom and me it was chuck roast in foil: you wrap a chuck roast in foil, dumping a packet of onion soup mix over it (and if you're feeling wacky, some Worcestershire sauce and garlic) before you seal it up, then throw it in a 350 oven for a couple of hours.)
They're like the green bean casserole - a can of green beans, a can of cream of mushroom soup, covered with crushed potato chips. Which is a STANDARD feature of my family's holiday meals, even when the rest of the meal is refreshingly non-canned.
This reminds me intensely of the Gallery of Regrettable Food, which is one of the great things on the Internet. www.lileks.com-- also has a brilliant Bad Interior Decor page.
