Cleaning the friendslist

Since my friendslist is GAWDAWFUL LONG (over 200 journals), I'm doing a bit of cleanup. The cleanup is primarily going through and seeing who hasn't posted in a long time, or who mostly posts stuff about fandoms I don't read/watch. There's nothing dramatic about my reasons for it, other than trying to keep the sheer volume of text to read under control.

If I've taken you off and you want to keep seeing my friends-only blathering, drop a note here and let me know - I view the friendslist as a reading list to organize frequently-read journals, not some sort of ... whatever the people who take it way too seriously see it. (Which means if you defriend me, I don't take it personally. :D)

LJ is being wonky and won't let me at my userpage, so I have no idea if this is pertinent or not--I haven't posted in ages thanks to AKHDJKG the start of the academic year *thrice dead*, but I'd appreciate being able to read your f-only posts. I promise it won't add much to your reading weight, unless God strikes down my linguistics professor in a transcription gone awry. *g*

XD No prob.

My cleanup hasn't actually done much to keep the reading under control, because I've taken off the people who ... aren't posting. :/ My problem is that if people on my friendslist post a lot and I read them, it's like "I can't take them off! I want to know what happens to X! And I commented on their journal recently! And *they* post nifty art, and *they're* really funny..."

I think I shall mostly have to train myself not to automatically friend back everyone who friends me. I meet really interesting people that way, but once the Thing Wot I Moved The Manga Analysis Posts Up For happens, I expect an influx of new people and I can't keep it up.

Or maybe I'll just make a "I don't read these very much (except when really really bored and need something new to read)" filter and put everyone there automatically. XD

I go round and round with this ... whether it's better to have a filter for journals I don't read much (but then I feel like I'm pretending to read them when I don't; and inevitably I read them more than I intend or have the time to) or simply not to friend same (but I kinda want to be friendly and let folks know that they're welcome and I'm glad they're there).

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-10-10 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. And I just realized that if I don't friend them, it makes it harder to tell who's friended me recently - I've now got 25ish journals who have me friended that I don't have friended, and ... if anyone new adds me, I'm not sure I'd be able to figure out who they were. :/ And I do like to at least go by and check them out.

Maybe I'll make the "Journals to read when I'm procrastinating" filter and put people there.

I have a bunch of custom friend filter thingies. Most are a way to structure my reading list into groups of similar people. But one is just to give people access to my locked entries; I never read anyone in it.

There is at least one service that keeps track of who friends and who defriends you. I've thought about using it, but my reading and read-by lists are still relatively small.

I have several filters set up so far, mostly as a way to manage the friendslist: regular friends, feeds, communities, and 'monitored', which is where I shove communities and journals that I read without ever intending to reply.

I use this one, because my memory for names is terrible and spotting one new name in an alphabetical list is beyond my capabilities:

And I use this one!

If you unfriend me, I'll leave dead ninja monkey pirate fetuses on your front door step every day until you friend me back.

No, just kidding. I'm so not. Get back in your box.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-10-10 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I did (you can check by seeing if you can see the latest Death Note announcement post from earlier tonight). ma'am yes ma'am!

[identity profile] moonlit-page.livejournal.com 2005-10-10 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
oh, i saw it. looks like those ninja monkey pirate babies get to live another day.

Cool. :) We are nothing if not humanitarian

Me? I'm a giver.

[identity profile] riofriotex.livejournal.com 2005-10-10 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
I would be one you'd take off under the original criteria because I pretty much never post in the LJ electronic journal. I got into LJ to network, particularly with other library folks in Texas. I really enjoy reading a lot of your stuff on other topics besides libraries, especially the Africa letters and (now) the BPAL reviews.

However, if you have a filter that could get me off the manga-related posts, please put me on that. I have tried but my nearing-50 self just can't get into manga, and I just don't have time to read those posts anyway! Sorry!

[identity profile] thomasyan.livejournal.com 2005-10-10 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Do you like little kids? If so and you're willing to give manga one more shot, try peeking at Yotsuba&! by Kiyohiko Azuma in a bookstore. I find it quite charming.

[identity profile] riofriotex.livejournal.com 2005-10-10 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'll keep an eye out for that at my library - I'm in circ and bound to handle it at some point. I will say this for manga - it sure helps circ stats - the teens place hold on TONS of it. No limit on the numbers you can check out (or place holds on) in our library system - not yet at least!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-10-10 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
:D Much of the manga posts are actually the public ones, or posted to the general friends filter. I've gone through and made sure you're on the generic friends and the Africa letters and no others, and if I make any other manga-related ones I'll OSTRACIZE YOU from them. XD

I know that you comment comparatively often on the Africa letters, so I didn't drop you off when I went through the friendslist.

(and hearkening back to an earlier discussion - the icon I'm using for this comments is pretty much what I imagine XD to look like. :D)

I *love* the friends-only blathering BEST! >_< Defriend me, and I'll start drawing rude pictures! ^_~

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-10-10 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
A fan of my bitching about work! :D

Might be worth it just to see the rude pictures XD

[identity profile] riofriotex.livejournal.com 2005-10-11 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I do like your work-bitchin' too - leave me on that list!

[identity profile] elfiepike.livejournal.com 2005-10-10 05:56 am (UTC)(link)
just as a note for future reference, i do indeed like reading all the entries that i'm privy to. :) i have a fairly large list but i usually can read through it in a few hours every week. XD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-10-10 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee. Yeah, you're on.

[identity profile] improbuspuer.livejournal.com 2005-10-10 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
OMGYOUUNFRIENDMEEE, I WLL HAT j00 4EVAA !!!eleventy!!42

Or, alternatively, I'll miss your friends-only happenings and regret that I don't post to normal f-lock at all very often. I'd love to be re-added, but I get that you need to cut your list down.

... *bribe?*

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-10-10 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
:D You're back on. I was mostly going through thr list and thinking for various people "OK, they don't seem to have posted much in their journal lately and I don't recall offhand if they've commented, so I'm not sure they're reading me..." but I figured I'd accidentally take off some people who like reading me, because my memory's like a leaky sieve.

[identity profile] dragonscholar.livejournal.com 2005-10-10 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, keep me on.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-10-10 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)

Let me know how you're doing, dear.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-10-10 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
OK. :D

[identity profile] cks.livejournal.com 2005-10-11 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
*ding*, I'm still reading and enjoying your LJ, and I have to say that I too have been enjoying the work-bitching and would like to continue. (Along with the manga discussions and everything else.)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-10-11 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, added back. XD
