Ask Metafilter, really, ask anywhere, in a nutshell:
Q. Hello, I would like to read some Rollicking Space Adventures! Can you recommend any?

A. What about [author]? He does gods and monsters, not aliens and space. Or what about [book]? It's not in space, but it's got superheroes!
(I am not the questioner. I offered up Lindsay Buroker's Fallen Empire and Rachel Bach's Paradox series.)

I saw that. I sort of raised my eyebrows at the recommendation of Ann Leckie, even though I myself really like her books, because I wouldn't have described her as rollicking. Ancillary Sword at least is likely to be a disappointment in that regard, and if I were looking for "rollicking" I personally would find the imperialism themes to be a little heavy. And I haven't read Provenance yet, so maybe that qualifies. But I reckon the questioner can sort that for themselves...

I see so much of this, everywhere.

It's like the Casting Call posts, where everyone recommends their current favorite movie crush, whether or not that person is at all appropriate for the role in question. (An INGENUE? You HAVE to HAVE DAISY RIDDLEY!)

I think the Need to Recommend is so strong in some people that they leap at ANY chance to flack their fave.

I can almost identify, but my Fear of Disappointing is even stronger.
