One of our tour guides (we booked 2 short private tours: one with a photographer and one for historic Venice) said that almost nobody falls in the canals: it’s so rare that when it happens, everybody talks about it for weeks. XD But given the sewage that gets dumped into it (it’s 70% wastewater treated and hotels and private residences are required to have septic tanks, but some still dump sewage into the canals), I can see that everyone does their damndest not to fall in.
