Computers

Rearranged my office a bit a week or two ago--moved a table that was against the wall partly out into the middle, and moved things around so the table is free for doing non-computer things at it--and have finally decided that yes, I hate my current computer setup, which is a desktop at a desk that's a hair too high so that I have to adjust my chair up so that my feet don't touch the floor, so I have to have a small footstool, and...and...and.... So it's time to do something about that, and I think my next computing rig will be a laptop with a dock that I can use to easily make it a desktop by plugging it into a monitor. (And perhaps use the laptop as a second monitor in those cases.)

Anyway, it's not going to happen soon because my current computer works totally fine so we can't justify the expense out of the regular budget, but I can start saving my art/design income for it. We priced out a top rig for it--I'm doing giant paintings in Photoshop with many, many layers and that calls for something pretty close to a high-end gaming rig--with an SSD, 1TB space, a dock and a 4K monitor and it's looking to be around $4K, yikes. (Note: it's a Macbook. I could probably get an equivalent PC for about half to 2/3 the price, but I've switched back and forth between the two for decades now and I'm tired of it. I've got an iMac right now, and I'm going to stick to what I've got.) That's going to take quite a lot of time to save up for, but I've got the Cintiq to deal with for right now, although it's hard to switch back and forth between the iMac and the Cintiq if I'm working on the same file in both.

We're also looking at getting a cheapish used PC the next time the university holds a sale of their used machines to serve as a basic Steam box, so that Toby can throw games up on the big TV in the media room and I can watch him play. We've got a device from Steam that theoretically allows for that, but it doesn't play well with Macs so he hasn't been able to do it much so far. The used PCs the university sells are about $150ish, and we can pop more RAM in there to make it more able to support games.

I can't believe how many computers we have right now*, but then again I grew up in a house that had 5 computers in it because my dad pretty much collected them so I shouldn't be surprised.

* Toby's desktop, his work laptop, the media server/backup machine, my desktop, my Cintiq, my netbook. And then if you count our iPads (I never use mine anymore), our phones, my Kindle, and Toby's smartwatch we could start our own electronics shop.
