I've got a book somewhere that follows the historical Journey to the West, listing out the points Sanzo et al visited, and at one point a few years back, vom_marlowe, me, and a couple of others started the ambitious task of working it out in such a way that you could follow it.

Naturally, we lost interest shortly thereafter. XD

I vaguely remember using Google Earth to start plotting the locations. Probably lost the file years ago, but I was quite impressed that many of the locations were still around (or at least similarly-named locations were).

IIRC, I was looking up the temple for some reason and had the same reaction. Definitely gives you an idea of how damn young the US is.
