Huh. Yet another option! I always called it a cart, very occasionally a basket, but ran across "buggy" for the first time when I got a roommate from South Carolina in grad school. Not sure where I came across "trolley".
I also call it a wagon. Possibly because I can still load three boys in it and drag it around, filling it with stuff along the way, which is the whole purpose of a wagon.
When I'm extremely flustered I call it a stroller.
In East Texas and later the southern Houston region I've nearly always heard it referred to as a "buggy", with the very occasional "cart" thrown in for good measure.
Is. I think the cultural dividing line between Central Texas and East Texas runs through Houston down the line through 59N, the 610 East loop, and out I-45 south.
As a kid I always heard it being called a "buggy". Even when we lived in Alabama and shopped at the Piggly Wiggly it was, "We're getting groceries today, so go get a buggy." XD
I have heard it on the news as "shopping cart" too.
While growing up in California, I heard both cart and basket. Here in Michigan, it's cart, especially since there are now real baskets to carry things around. I don't ever recall seeing those in California.
I know our friends across the pond call it a 'trolley', but I've never heard anyone here in California call it anything other than a 'shopping cart'. (We only call the hand-held things 'baskets'.) The terms 'buggy' and 'wagon' are totally new to me! Huh.
I'm not sure where I picked up calling it a buggy, especially since my mother is from Kansas. I strongly object to calling them baskets however, since that is the item you carry with you when doing a small shopping trip :-D

When we moved to North Carolina, the second incomprehensible sentence uttered to us was "C'n ah carry y'all's buggy out?"
After an awkward pause, my mom said, "No, thank you" (figuring that was safest).

In northern New Mexico it was usually a "basket".

I say basket for the hand-held ones.
(Oh no, I commented too soon after my previous comment and LJ thinks I'm a bot!)
