Moar art

The final (-ish, barring tweaking) cover painting for the endlessly patient [livejournal.com profile] selenite's forthcoming novel, Torchship.

And here's the final(-ish, again) cover:

Done in Photoshop. I bashed together the asteroid in the scene from photos from the recent Rosetta comet mission (fun fact: all public domain!) and then painted over it to bring out interesting shapes and colors, Toby posed for the astronaut, and [livejournal.com profile] selenite supplied me with a 3D model of the ship he'd designed.

Look at how textured that rock is! *mind-fondles it* Umm, the rest is good too of course. I've always been a sucker for "spacey" covers and this one would certainly help me pick it up and read the back.

I keep looking back at that rock! XD Thank you!

Where you would see:

A captain who'll take any job if there's enough money in it.
A pilot with an agenda of her own.
And a mechanic with an eye on the pilot.

The crew of the
Fives Full are just trying to make enough money to keep themselves in the black while avoiding the attention of a government so paranoid it's repealed Moore's Law.

They're not looking for adventure in the
stars . . . but they're not going to back down just because something got in their way.

Thoughts?

I like it ^^

That last sentence made me want to go:

'They're not looking for adventure in the stars.... but they're not going to back down [just because/when/if] it comes looking for them.'

Thanks!

That alternate has a ring to it, I'll think on it.

It sounds like an interesting universe and cast of characters I'd like to know more about, even though the synopsis reveals nothing about the events in the story itself. It also makes me wonder how that unlooked for adventure ties in with the cover and that's intriguing enough to make me want to read a sample/ thumb through the first chapter to see if I click with the writing (I can be a frustratingly finicky reader sometimes).

Overall I'd say the synopsis is doing its job just fine and the cover is interesting enough to make me want to read the back in the first place. That's pretty much all you can do for the outside. :)

Thank you. The sample will be up in a couple of of months (hear God laugh), I hope you like it.

I like how you lead the eye from the close-up across the title to the big scene where everything really opens up and lets the viewer take in the whole of it.

Thank you! :D

Kerning quibble--would it look better if the period was next to the K instead of evenly spaced between the K and G?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2015-09-14 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You're absolutely right. :) I also want to tone down that ridge of rock pointing at the ship at the bottom--it keeps looking more and more jarring to me every time I look at it.
