I have a problem!

Maybe you can help!

I have to create enough art in 8 weeks to fill 3 bays at an SF con art show.

I also, as I have this sideline of ebook covers, have to create enough example covers and pre-made covers that I can sell to make my website worth visiting.

I have zero inspiration, alas. (I swing wildly between zero inspiration and too much coming at me, and no focus. #ADHDlife)

I am thinking that maybe if people supplied me with fake book titles, original characters from your fic (Genre fic: SF/F/Horror/Historical/Paranormal Romance, etc.) or RPGs, or other types of potential inspiration, it might help me focus.

No fanart, and you'd have to give me permission to sell prints and/or originals if it's your original character. (Stick with fake book/story titles if you're unsure!)

If I end up with a work out of it, I'll happily email you a high-res copy of it (with a permission letter for printing it out if you want to take it somewhere or get a print made online).

Wanna draw an androgynous, six-winged, goth god of free will?

yhlee: Flight Rising Spiral dragon, black-red-gold (Flight Rising Jedao baby Spiral)

Do you draw undead guy generals in super-fancy black-uniforms-with-gold-braid with creepy floating yellow eyes in the shadows? Especially if they have a luxe skiffy gun to go with?

(This would be for Ninefox Gambit, though, not an OC in a fanfic--it's the fox character, except in his actual kind-of human form.)
yhlee: Alto clef and whole note (middle C). (hxx Deuce of Gears)

Appearance: more or less East Asian (because we need more cockamamie Asian space operas), short black hair with bangs. Lean build (he's a duelist). Uniform would have gold wings over a gold eye as the insignia on his left breast. Wears black fingerless gloves along with the black-uniform-with-gold-braid. (Sorry, I have an absurd fondness for the way braid looks.) Weird hybrid chessmaster with a penchant for crazy-ass risktaking, very calm, good at reading people (in case personality notes help you with faces--sometimes they do for me).

I would actually be equally interested in the bad sparks version of this. ;)

I admit that I used several title generators to come up with these. They were all awful, but these were the best (or strangest) of them. All apostrophe misuse is, for once, not mine.

Whispering Door,
Silent Servants,
Forgotten Dream,
The Illusion of the Flower,
The Stolen Lights,
The Dreamer's Bridge,
Cold Edge,
The Silent Girl,
Forgotten Wizard,
The Cracked Prophecy,
Hour of Sorcery.

(Some of the weirder ones.)

The Sucking Sky,
The Butterfly's Slaves,
The Mist of the Voyager,
Planet in the Girlfriend,
Cloud of Hustler,
Dying in the Dying,
Broken Snake,
Predator of Gate,
The Flower's Boyfriend,
Mage in the Witches,
Sweet Skies in Running Cities,
The Fallen Anvil,
The Rose of the Blade (Revolutionary Girl Utena, is that you?),
Thousandfold Face,
Kitty of Rune,
The Thousandfold Whale.

-----------

Secretly I quite like "Kitty of Rune". I imagine it's some sort of D&D like fantasy setting where Rune is a cosmopolitan city state and Kitty is a hard-arsed, veteran adventurer with a nickname they don't much like but can't get rid of because they're too well known. Kitty goes on many adventures to get away from all of those people, and so their legend reaches ever further...

I also quite like "The Butterfly's Slaves" because it gives me the image of a mob of people with horrified expressions trying to flee from a normal, dainty looking butterfly perched somewhere nearby.

"The Flower's Boyfriend" should probably be a wacky anime or manga about a flower that loved a boy so much they turned in to a human, but still have some odd flower traits that need to be kept hidden from everyone else.

I love The Butterfly's Slaves and The Flower's Boyfriend.

Excellent, thank you!

Has the title generator been watching HunterxHunter? XD Because I swear to you, oneĀ  of the villains is a guy with butterfly wings... and mind control.

Actually, I could use some help getting covers for some stuff!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2015-07-12 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're not on a tight deadline, that'd work, since at the moment I can't guarantee that any particular one will get done before the con deadline.

Can I propose characters from my original fiction? If you do them I will buy prints!

Part I: The Change series

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2015-07-12 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay!

So, you already did one for Stranger, but if you want to do more for that series...

Las Anclas is a post-apocalyptic walled frontier town, similar to California Gold Rush or mission towns. There are jewel-colored deadly crystal trees in the desert outside! People ride antlered horses. The cows have rhino-like armored plates. Cats glide via flaps like flying squirrels! Giant lobsters stalk the beaches!

In Rebel, we see another town, which is much more lush and green. It has rice paddies, flocks of rainbow-colored message-carrying parakeets, flamingoes in all colors, dolphins, and miniature hippoes. Houses are on stilts or border canals, somewhat like Venice.

Interesting scenes (I can provide waaaay more detail if any of this sounds interesting)

Ross Juarez, a handsome but underfed and scruffy Latino guy who throws knives, spends much of Hostage in a battle of wills with Kerry Voske Cho, a Korean-American girl who is a crown princess. She has long braids that she wears wrapped around her head, a strikingly sharp-featured face, and wears very elegant embroidered tight blouses and pants. We originally were going to have the cover of Hostage be them handcuffed together in the desert.

Jennie Riley is a dark-skinned African-American girl who wears her hair in short bead-tipped braids, muscular and also voluptuous (like Venus and Serena Williams) fights with a sword in multiple scenes which I'd be happy to describe.

An archetypal bounty hunter, a tall guy in a black duster and hat, chases Ross across the desert.

The sheriff, Elizabeth Crow, is a Native American woman in her thirties with long black hair, one half of her face beautiful, the other half skull-like and with a yellow snake eye.

The chief archer, Ms. Lowenstein, is a thirty-something Jewish mother with yellow cat-eyes.

The entire giant battle sequence in Stranger has characters fighting in ripped-up, blood-spattered, rain-drenched party clothes.

Rebel features a fantastical ruined city taken over by glittering dragonflies, giant bees, and crystal trees.

There are glittering metallic horses with cat-like tails.

Thank you! I've got this listed down in my Inspiration Spreadsheet and I'll get back to you if I start doing one. :D

Part 2: Werewolf Marines!

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2015-07-12 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Echo is a genetically engineered super-assassin who prefers to wear tank tops, jeans, and moccasin-like flats. She looks a bit like Tricia Helfer with short, white-blonde hair, and people who see her in action often think "blonde ninja." She leaps like a cat, and is often seen kicking ass and climbing the picturesque mesas of the Las Vegas deserts where the evil underground base that enslaved and created her is located.

Echo has a clone sister, Charlie, who has long hair, uses a cane, wears fluttery gauze dresses, and reads romance novels.

Echo's partner, DJ Torres, is a Filipino werewolf Marine with a sweet, boy-next-door look. He can be seen kicking ass and climbing mesas at Echo's side, or cuddling with her, or being a DJ at a dance club, or listening to music on his beloved iPod. He also looks really good in a tux. There's a scene where he and Echo go undercover as a married couple at a fancy diplomatic party, where he wears a tux and she wears the seventh dress down, but in red: http://bethrevis.tumblr.com/post/82849622149/you-could-kill-a-man-in-any-of-these-dresses-and

DJ can also be seen in uniform with his best buddy, werewolf Marine Roy Farrell. Roy carries a SAW, and DJ carries a rifle and the SAW's extra ammunition. Roy is a huge handsome guy with gray eyes and black hair, described as "an Irish Viking." Since DJ is dyslexic, when they're kicking back at the base, Roy reads aloud to him.

And finally, Roy's girlfriend (also a werewolf) is Laura Kaplan, who has curly brown hair and is plump and voluptuous. She's a semi-reformed con artist. They can be seen hanging out in a cabin in Mariposa, which is very scenic. In one of the more dramatic scenes, Roy gets shot during a snowstorm and Laura has to help him into the cabin.

Want to do a kickass female superhero OC? I have one that dates back to my RPG days, lo these many moons ago. Her name was Flechette, main weapons were, you guessed it, wrist-mounted Flechette guns. Also superstrength and gliding, because I was a WW fangirl without realizing it, lol.

Very tall (6'6") and lean, long black hair, Native American, sharp-featured. Attitude from hell, mostly because she had a Mysterious But Obviously Tragic Past, involving having her head messed with by the GM's Big Bad Psychic Villain. Wore black motorcycle leathers with red accents and a black motorcycle helmet, wore her hair loose under that. Was either asexual or just deeply traumatized, so a romance cover wouldn't be a good fit - but if you want to do action, she'd be great!

http://rurounitriv.deviantart.com/art/Flechette-545935180 is a sketch I did just now, if you want a better visual. I had a lot of fun with her back in the day.

I've been meaning to ask you to do (as a commission) a portrait of my current tabletop RPG character, so I would be thrilled if you wanted to do a pic of Chumei for this!

This is in the Numenera system. Chumei is a Rugged Jack who Works miracles: basically, se is a ranger-type who has the power to heal. I see hir as presenting gender neutral, with dark brown skin (I was thinking of north African people), black hair clipped very short (or possibly in very short plaits or Bantu-style knots), and pale eyes (grey-green or light hazel). This is a post-apocalyptic scenario by many millenia, so hir features don't have to be similar to any particular single current nationality. Se is sturdy in build.

Before becoming an adventurer, se worked as a hunter and botanist in a cool desert (think the Atacama rather than the Sahara or Death Valley). Se has a great knowledge of useful plants but is awkward in social situations. Clothing should be practical gear for a hunter/traveler, leaning toward camouflage colors for hir native region. This is a schizo tech culture, canonically, so gear can include items that look contemporary to us. Se is armed with a plain sword and a crank crossbow (also has knives but uses them mainly for utility purposes).

The second Torchship book is a zero draft right now. I do have a cover idea if you still need inspirations:

Close-up on a large, wrecked space-ship. It's been torn in half (about this condition (http://photo.sf.co.ua/g/238/16.jpg)) with decks exposed. Mitchie, in a spacesuit, is throwing a space-suited man off the ship into free space. On close inspection the man's hands and feet are tied.

I'm expecting to publish that next spring, so no urgency.

At my old editorial job, in 2003 I stumbled upon vestiges of the company's long distant past in overheated novels, and I found some of the titles irresistible. (http://viridian5.livejournal.com/423901.html)
