Spycam again

We've set up the kitty spycam in the laundry room again, this time pointing directly at the litterboxes. It's not because of the Poop Bandit, who we've IDed as Sora, and who seems to be getting more and more finicky about the state of the litterboxes. It's because someone has managed to pee over the barrier at the back of the box and get it all over the floor and wall there! This is the point where we're almost saying "I'm not even mad. I'm just impressed." I mean... look at the boxes. Someone, by whom I mean "probably Sora,"* is somehow hitching themselves up high enough to pee over that barrier in the back.

So the camera is in place, and we shall see.

* Probably Sora, because while Nefer likes to perch on the front edge of the box and her aim isn't that good (hence the puppy pads on the floor in front of the boxes), lately she's been showing signs of arthritis or something** that leads her to use her claws to pull herself up on objects instead of jumping, so I don't see how she has the dexterity to make it over the edge of the box.

** Vet appointment in the works--I'm waiting on them to get back to me after requesting one. She's not limping and is behaving perfectly normally otherwise.

That's pretty impressive. One of our cats accidentally overshoots the tray on occasion because she often refuses to stand on any type of cat litter. She will enact a weird acrobatic routine to balance herself on the sides of the box as she aims her behind to where she knows she has to pee in an attempt to avoid it at all costs. All of our trays have sides of an equal height except for the "entrance" lip though, so I have no idea how (probably) Sora is managing that one.

I'll report back once we find out!

Cats are weird.

Sora somehow balances on the back lip of one of the litter boxes? On the adjacent lips of both boxes? On the pipe? Keeps two feet down and hind feet up somehow?

Yeah, none of those seems likely.

Says someone not versed in the way of cats, so you know my comments must be especially wise :)

I think [livejournal.com profile] batwrangler may be on to something with Elevated Butt Syndrome. Alas. We've bought two large boot trays off of Amazon to at least keep the stuff from seeping under the washing machine.

(maybe I'll have got all coding and wording correct with this edit...)

I am ashamed I know this: there is a phenomena called "elevator butt peeing" where cats lift their bottoms as they urinate, thus spraying the walls outside their litter boxes. The general recommendations for dealing with this seem to be getting an enclosed box without a seam (because the urine can leak through the seam) or make a DIY high-sided box out of a storage bin.

Yeah, that sounds the most likely thing. We've got two large boot trays coming to us from Amazon so the stuff won't seep under the washing machine, at least, and may end up hacking something together to protect the wall.

This sort of thing is one reason I ended up buying litterboxes with covers.

We have been through so many litterboxes, and we really like these--they have slots on the bottom where liquid drains through to an absorbent pad so you don't get ammonia fumes. Bah, cats.
