Winter wonderland

We took a train from Kyoto to Toyama today, then changed there for a train to Takayama. The reason for this is that we’d heard that the ride from Toyama to Nagoya is one of the most beautiful in Japan, and we,ll be doing a Takayama to Tokyo via Nagoya in a couple of days.

Well, the report wasn’t kidding. The track is cut through the mountains, so you get forested mountainsides, rivers at the bottom of gorges, and at the moment it’s all silvered with snow. Toby took a bunch of pictures through the window with his phone, and I think this is the best and most representative of them. (And, as always, I’ll be posting a better version once we get home.)

Cannot wait for the trip to Nagoya in a couple of days. Maybe I won’t pack my camera away for this one.

We wanted to do that last year, but the route was closed due to heavy snow! I am very happy to see your photos. So beautiful.

Our first train was 25 minutes late, perhaps due to ice or snow, so we missed our connection and had to wait an hour and a half for the next one, but that means we actually got to eat lunch. The trip from Toyama to Takayama was done entirely in a snowstorm, which just added that sense of otherworldliness to everything.

If you have time, go the Osu Kannon market in Nagoya! I spent way too much time there when I lived in Okazaki. (Though Nishiki market in Kyoto is prettier and better for food.)

Osu Kannon's a good place to go if you're planning on grabbing some inexpensive used kimono like a proper gaijin tourist and won't be able to make it to a temple market.

Alas, we only had half an hour or so in Nagoya, but we're already making lists of possibilities for the next trip to Japan. :D
