(no subject)

I'm making a cheapass Advent calendar for Toby...

I had no ideas for Christmas presents, and then realized I could just buy a bunch of tiny crap and make an Advent calendar. I was originally going to make a sort of nice one, but decided it was too much work, so an almost-dry Marksalot on brown paper bags dumped onto the coffee table it is!

Toby told me he feels guilty now, because he has no ideas for a Christmas present for me and I'm giving him all this, and I was all YOU WON'T FEEL THAT WAY AFTER YOU SEE WHAT'S IN THE BAGS! :)

Anyway, only 17 bags out so far because the next Amazon shipment arrives today, with which I will finish the calendar. Well, up to #23. I did order one item from Amazon Japan, and it's due to show up next Wednesday.

I'm actually vaguely excited now for him to open them. :)

Advent calendars, yay! It soothes my need for surprise!bags.

I made Smittens (top swag) for Kiro, and then he made tiny stockings (bottom swag) for me.

Last year I got stupid ambitious and made these tiny knitted things to stuff them with.

I've heard that Amazon Japan won't ship to the US, but I guess I heard wrong. Or did you buy from a third-party seller through it?

Amazon Japan has shipped to me a number of times. They only use the super-speedy expensive airmail shipping, though, which doubled the cost of the item in question. (But at that it still cost less than the Japanese 3rd-party shippers on Amazon US were charging for the item alone, never mind the super-slow shipping they were using!)

Interesting. Of course searching for things is still an issue if one does not know Japanese.

what an awesome idea. Thanks for sharing.

LOL! All this made me laugh. ("Guffaw" is probably the correct word.)

Is that where the rubber sole came in, though? Then I hope you got it, because that would be memorable, to say the least.

(And I see that Momofuku cookbook on the table, there...)

Hope you and he have fun with the gifts!

You'd be surprised! If you're looking for a particular artist or author, they usually have the romaji of their name in the system. Mind you, if you're looking for stuff that's a bit more vague than that, it's easier to find a website somewhere that has the Japanese-character version of it and cut and paste. :)

I mostly buy artbooks anyway, so the name of the artist is usually sufficient for my purposes.

You're welcome!

As this is a public post that Toby can see, I can neither confirm nor deny that this is where the rubber sole came in! ;)

The Momofuku cookbook was loaned to us by a friend, so I could see if I wanted to get a copy. I haven't got around to poring through it yet. :)

Toby, LOOK! OVER THERE! :diverts:

BTW, I found a simplified version of the pork buns: http://food52.com/recipes/28063-momofuku-s-pork-buns
Because, pork buns! This is the one item I figured I could pull off at home, but the cookbook version looks a little time-intensive.

BTW, I just got flagged as spam. :-(

Drat you, Captcha advertising.
