Hotels/ryokan/hanare for the entire journey: booked. Tour to Shirakawa-go: booked. JR rail passes: booked. It's been a rather productive day, I think, even though it doesn't feel that way because I've been sitting on my ass in front of the computer all day.

The prebookings on a trip like this are quite exhausting! Are you going to a hot spring town?

Technically yes, because we're staying in Takayama, but that day we're going to Shirakawa-go for part of the day, and neither Toby nor I are really into public baths, especially since they'll be gender-segregated which means we'd be on our own.

This is the place I'm second-most excited about: www.airbnb.com/rooms/1160447. It's in Arashimaya, which Rachel and I went to for a day (it had the fox shrine we found), and is a little traditional guesthouse behind a traditional row house. The most-excited is also in Kyoto-we're splashing out for one night on a ryokan with the full kaiseki experience. (During the New Year holiday--ouch! But the only other day we could do it, their chef was on vacation and FOOOOOOOOOD is what we,re going for!)

Each of those places will have a nice private bath, though!
