Haaaats

Looking at knitted hats for the Japan trip, and I have made a discovery that quite often women are subjected to a giant bobble on top of their beanies, while men don't get that anywhere near as much.

I mean, I used to have giant bobbles on my hat. When I was EIGHT.

edit: I mean...LOOK AT THIS. 300 hats and I didn't find a single bobble on a hat listed for men, but plenty on hats listed for kids and women. (And who the hell is gendering SNOW HATS?!)

Huh. Meanwhile, I hardly ever see bobbles/poms atop women's knitted hat patterns. I guess that if one makes it for oneself, one can omit the yarn-wasting aspect.

Speaking of hat patterns... I like to knit hats. I have too many knit hats. But I keep knitting them anyway. If some time you would like a knit hat, I would be happy to knit one for you for the cost of yarn and shipping. ^_^

Oh yes. And the ones by men--most of them are also for women. I can tell because they aren't sized large enough to fit my head (men's L/XL).

I think in Japan, at least, the giant bobble is gender-neutral. I seem to recall the male lead in Kimi ni Todoke receiving a hat with a GIGANTIC bobble on top. So there's that, I guess? (BTW, I still thought it was ridiculous, but . . .)

Omi had a bobble hat in Weiss Kreuz, too. I suspect they're seen as a bit goofy, but more gender-neutral than they are in the US.

REI was selling some nice SmartWool (I think) beanies and matching scarves a few years ago for women, no bobbles.

I have a good watch cap pattern if you wish to knit one. Runs up very fast. Hats are great quickies.

Thanks, but I don't knit (and I really do need to try hats on before committing to them, as my hair is so fine that many hats just slide up and off of my head quickly enough that I expect an audible "pop!").

I may end up using my old grey hat, but I'll have to tack the brim up as it keeps falling into my face. My other two winter hats that I like are just a hair too small, and tend to press my ears into my glasses arms painfully after a while. At least the grey hat wads up fairly compactly.

Bring your grey hat and go immediately to Takashima or just generally shopping! There were super cute knitted hats and I thought the prices were reasonable even in the "crafty" section.

Dec. 26 all the Christmas stuff will be up still in the stores, but do hurry to see it. I don't know if light displays will still be on.

That,s probably the best bet--I can get a nifty souvenir, :D

We,lol be arriving the afternoon of the 26th and may not make it out until the 27th. Will there be Christmas stuff on sale then? Reason I ask is that when we bought the house I decided I wanted to collect Santas, so we' r bought a Santa figure each of the three years since, and I was hoping I could get one in Japan this year.

Possibly the 27th, yes, but things for New Year go up very quickly. Don't leave it till the 28th.

German Christmas decorations seemed very trendy last year and I saw many for sale. What really caught my eye---since it was close to the calendar New Year---was the enormous variety of sets of the year animals for sale, all different kinds and sizes. There was one set that looked like wooden Noah's Ark animals.... except for a dragon with a roguish look.

I do not remember seeing any cool printed-paper Christmas decorations. I bought an entire printed cut-and-fold village high street, but that was not Christmassy.

I suspect there are special Christmas stores and I did not happen to hit one. The decorations were lovely though. Buying something in big department stores just to get the beautiful reusable bag would make a lot of sense!

Santa's hat has a bobble, though admitted it's not right on the top of his head.

And we will be touching down in Japan on December 26th, so totally out of season!

And the sort of nerd I am made me react with "Jayne is a girl's name." He got an impressive bobble on his hat.
