I recently listened to this BBC Discover Wildlife (http://www.discoverwildlife.com/podcast/rodents-running-wheels-ancient-woodlands-and-rewilding) podcast, wherein one of the stories was about a scientist who put running wheels into nature to see if mice would run on them, so they'd know if mice who ran on running wheels in captivity were performing a natural or a pathological behavior. Result: wild mice loved the things.
The interviewer asked the scientist if the mice enjoyed it and she had to hem and haw properly about defining such things scientifically, but did admit that there seemed to be no other explanation.
(Interesting fact: wild mice run about 6km in a day over the course of their daily activities. Wild mice with access to a running wheel run about 6km on it per day.)
