Flight Rising open registration coming up!
If you want to breed (and bling out, and fight) fictional dragons, Flight Rising is going to open up registration for April 14th (5AM server time, which is Pacific Standard Time [-7GMT?]) for 24 hours.
I am PecanOwl over there--because I have no idea why I didn't want to be telophase and there was a bag of pecans and a timer shaped like an owl on my desk when I made the account--and this is Maura, my clan matriarch, a Guardian:

Aristotle here is one of my newest dragons, a Coatl:

Camael is one of my more spectacular dragons. He's an Imperial and yes, he is wearing a fez. Fezzes are cool.

I have two nests starting (Spirals, Guardians, and Pearlcatchers) so I can give hatchlings away to people I know! Just let me know when you join. :D

hoardingdragon there who asks for a list of 5 things each hour, and if you have any of them you can sell them to her for in-game treasure. Each player picks a Flight when they sign up, and you're stuck with it, so be sure you like the eye color you get. :D I'm in the Light Flight.
There is an Auction House where you can "sell" dragons and hoard items to other players for treasure or gems, and a Marketplace where you can "purchase" items from the game itself for treasure or gems.
You can also breed your dragons--there are simple genetic rules that they follow, and you can't be sure exactly what you'll get, number-wise and looks-wise, but that makes it fun. :D Breeding takes several days, with you logging in daily to click on the Incubate button, unless you spend real money to get a Hatching Boon (or whatever it is). See below for Gems, the currency you can buy.
Treasure is in-game currency. You get it by selling stuff to other players, by logging in daily (I forget how much you get a day), by "petting" familiars each day that you win in the arena or buy, or by playing simple browser games in the Fairgrounds. Oh, you also get it (and get rid of dragons cluttering up your lair) by "exalting" dragons--sending them to live with the god that's the leader of your Flight.
Gems are in-game currency that you get by logging in daily (1 gem/day), by selling stuff for gems, or by spending real money. You do not have to play with gems, although yeah, some of the shinier genes are gem purchases. (People also buy them then sell them in the Auction House for treasure, so if you're patient and stockpile a bunch of treasure, which takes a while, you can get them that way, or just buy dragons with the gene and try to breed it into your lair.)
The Fairgrounds have simple browser games, one vaguely similar to Tetris, one is a nifty jigsaw puzzle, one is a game of Memory (matching symbols), and one is like the Popcap dinosaur egg shooting game, if you ever played that. You get treasure for playing them.
The Arena is a place where you do turn-based combat with various animals/creatures. Toby watched me over my shoulder and said "You're playing the Pokemans!" As you defeat them, you get random drops of hoard items, which you can stuff in your hoard, sell in the auction house, or sell back to the game for treasure. (grinding place!)
There's a player vs. player version of the arena, but as you don't get stuff and treasure from doing that, I have never bothered to try. (I like browser games because I don't HAVE to interact with people live!)
There are also highly trafficked forums, which I almost never go to except for the bug-reporting threads and the Guides threads. I learned how to quickly level my dragons and farm for stuff from the guides. :D I think Chomiji hangs out on the forums more than I do, so you can ask her how lizard-friendly they are. The mods tend to be pretty observant and keep a lid on things, I think, but check with Chomiji. I do not suggest the lizard look for Flight Rising stuff on Tumblr, as you never know what you might find.
I suspect if you think the lizard might like it, I and Chomiji and a few others would volunteer to help her out if she has questions or runs into something she doesn't like or understand, until you get to know the game a bit more.
* Apparently they never die if you forget to feed them, just get cranky and refuse to fight in the arena.
** 10 gathering turns daily; 15 if you keep your dragons above 85% fed for 3 days in a row.
