Flight Rising and Japan

If you're on Flight Rising and into pink and purple dragons, I've got four hatchlings up for grabs. They're the four unnamed ones first in my lair, Guardian, Tundra, and Mirror. I shall happily give them away to good homes! (well, or trade them for one treasure, as FR seems to not allow for straight gifting.)

I'm PecanOwl over there.

As for the Japan trip, I forgot to mention that one of our primary reasons for going is to EAT ALL THE THINGS. We've been watching the Mind of a Chef series on Netflix, and David Chang keeps circling back to Japan, most especially Japan's regional specialty ramen shops, and Toby realized that he wanted to try all of it. So one of our goals is to make a list of foods to eat in Japan and try to get as much as possible. :D

Hitsumabushi eel. Soooo good. There's also a Nagoya-style miso that's sort of burned-tasting and interesting -- not so great at the train station, but Yama-chan's was delicious.

In Hiroshima there is an entire multistory building of okonomiyaki stalls. Just sayin'.

Kanazawa had the very best fish, but that's pretty far out of your way.

I went there! After Worldcon in 2007 I went on a tour with a bunch of other fans, and after we arrived in Hiroshima we had a free evening and one of the guys in the group had heard of this place, so most of us ended up going there.

What you may not be able to tell from those pictures is that most of the places are kind of small. We eventually found one that was mostly unoccupied, and piled in, and the food was great. Since there will only be two of you, you'll be able to choose for more criteria than "can be taken over by 15 or so tourists at once".

I will hopefully be going to Japan sometime in 2015! Andy will be attending a meeting in Hakodate sometime that year -- the council hasn't decided when to hold it yet. Not midwinter, I hope. We're planning to take the whole family.
