Just what I needed

Looks like we've got weevils. Yay!

I ahve now taken the chili powders* and herbs & spices and thrown them in the deep freeze for a week Just In Case (there's a lot of things there weevils won't touch but, you know, belt and suspenders), and am about to go through the rest of the stuff in the pantry to see what I can just toss (heavily wrapped in double plastic as recommended by the OSU ag extension service advisory I dug up, as it seems they can chew holes in plastic AWESOME), and what are expensive ingredients we bought for the gluten-free cooking tests and thus will freeze for a week to kill things.

The weevils appear to be staggering across the kitchen floor and promptly expiring, so I guess some residue left from the last time exterminators came through is active, which is good, although their mere presence is still AUGH.

* You know we're Texans: we have MULTIPLE chili powders in the pantry. Plus no control over my body.

Damn, that is always so very provoking.

We have been lucky, it's been a long while since anything of the sort has shown up. I store most things in glass jars with gasket seals or airtight plastic... not a sure-fire method of preventing them, I know. I believe those pantry moth traps can work.

Aaah! Weevils!

(What's scarier, weevils or the state lege?)

We have multiple chili powders up here in MA! Unspecified chili powder, chipotle, and ancho, in our cabinet.

(Your footnote made me snerk.)

We have--if I can remember correctly, because I'm not going to get into the freezer just for a comment--Tonto Basin, Bull Run, chipotle, ancho, cayenne, and a couple of others. Plus dried anchos, guajillos, and a chipotle. And, I am pleased to discover because I'd forgotten we had them, garam masala and a curry mix of some ilk. Both of which are sold at our local indie spice/chile shop. XD

The Tonto Basin stuff is really nice: it smells raisiny. I don't think Tonto Basin and Bull Run are blends, I think they're some sort of oofy small variety of chile, but I couldn't tell you for sure.

And except for the cayenne, these are only chile powders rated 3 or lower on the scale the spice shop uses! I can't take 'em any hotter than that (3 is a jalapeno, for comparison)! The shop has an entire ROOM dedicated to their dried and ground chile products.
