Stuff

I'm currently rereading Water Sleeps, the 8th book of Glen Cook's Black Company series. I'm now into the books that I've read only once previously, so instead of noticing the landscape, as I did more on the books I'd read multiple times previously, I'm now actually managing to get the plot. (I read fast and can't slow down easily, and tend to get the gist of things on first reading, more detail on the second, and then various other bits of things on subsequent rereadings.)

And I wanted to talk about the dinner we had at SER (image the E has a line over it) on Saturday night. This is the oofy restaurant on the top of the Anaotle, the hotel that A-Kon was held at. [personal profile] myrialux and I got a few foodie friends to join us, and we got reservations for 9:30 PM, as the A-Kon Press office didn't close until 9.

The food was fantastic. As was the ambiance, and the view--we had a table not too far from the floor-to-ceiling windows showing a panorama of Dallas as Saturday night's thunderstorm rolled in. One of our two (!) servers told us that in high winds they had to evacuate because the building shakes, and are obviously not allowed to use the elevators, and 27 floors is quite a long way to go.

I don't remember what wine I had, other than it was a Merlot, but it was good. I had the hamachi crudo to start with, which was slices of hamachi with lime juice, a few other things, and slices of jalapeno on top. The jalapeno left behind just enough heat for me when I flipped it off the hamachi slices, as I am a wimp about that sort of thing.

[personal profile] myrialux and Jen, the friend sitting next to me, had the lobster bisque. [personal profile] myrialux pronounced it better then our local lobster bisque supplier, Lucile's, which I say is HERESY. Leora, sitting across from me, had the charcuterie plate which had a pile of things on it, very few of which I remember. (We pretty much shared most things we ordered with everyone else!)

I had the special, which was Japanese sea bass served on a bed of roasted vegetables. [personal profile] myrialux got the lamb, which he'd been jonesing for ever since he saw the menu. Two of our party got the Wagyu Big Rib which is a 22-oz monster of a prime rib, which came with a FANTASTIC tomato chutney. Leora had the duck breast. I don't remember what her husband had, and [livejournal.com profile] puppleball didn't order an entree (she wasn't that hungry, and mostly came along to hang out with us) and ended up eating enough samples of everyone's entree and the extra side dishes we ordered to make up an entree. :D

And speaking of those side dishes, the hen of the woods (mushroom) was wonderful--it had a smokiness to it. And there was fancy mac and cheese with pancetta that everyone who actually likes mac and cheese (sorry, I imprinted on the orange stuff in the box) assured me was fantastic. There were sweet onion rings with a tasty homemade ranch side sauce. We also ordered a side of garlic mashed potatoes that didn't make it onto the table, but that was OK because we had plenty of food otherwise.

I was the only one who ordered dessert (well, after 22 ounces of prime rib, you kinda have to roll out of the place!), and I got beignets with chocolate sauce and a cafe au lait sauce. We rounded everything off with shots of Oatmeal Cookies thanks to Leora and Jason.

All in all, we spent two hours at dinner and are already talking about going back next year and doing it again. :)

Eating great food with great friends at leisure plus conversation, and without having to deal with preparing and cleaning up, plus a great view - being sociable doesn't get any better than this.
