Oh dear

Watching The Next Food Network Star. Why why why is there always one contestant on these "Next...Star" type shows who doesn't realize that by being bitchy about the other contestants from the first, they are never going to win? The networks don't want talent that have that sort of public perception. (at least at the beginning!)

I think the producers feel that they must put in some contestants for the viewers to hate.

What the others said. It's to agitate the waters. It happens on most of the reality competition shows, and it's the thing that I absolutely hate about them.

Oh, oh! Is this going to be another year where the winner is blatantly obvious from Go! (Like a few years back with Aarti?)

I don't remember much from episode 1 except the people getting the Edit of Death*, so I'd ahve to watch ep 2 to see if it's that obvious, but I think it's fairly obvious that the real competition is between a small number of people. Last year's was reasonably obvious, as the network had a huge hole in the Quirky Hipster Sciencey Guy since Good Eats had just quit so Whatshisface just had to not screw up to be guaranteed a slot. (I don't know why they pretend that the top 4 or 5 aren't going to get web shows or shows over on the Cooking Channel or whatnot...)

* For those reading this who don't watch reality shows, if you leave early you don't get much air time, so you tend to get a disproportionate amount of air time in the early episodes.
