I know the real answer is "because every road leads to pr0n on the Internet," but I am still at a loss to explain why Googling for "comic thumbnails" and "comics thumbnails," to search for examples of such to show someone, throws back so many pr0n hits.

Strangely enough, doing a Google Image search for "comic thumbnails" comes up with little to no porn at all.
