Otakon cosplayers redux

1) Jiraiya managing to get the pose held in picture 4.

2) Anyone know what it is with all the paper bags on heads (6)? (The pic before and the entire next page and part of the apge after that is that same cosplay group - some nice stuff in there)

3) The first time I've seen someone actually play Karasu (5). The one after that has a fairly decent Al from FMA, and an Ed with automail.

4) Heh. Kyuubi vs. transformed Sasuke (3). XD (is picture 1 from Princess 9?)

5) Ha! I didn't recognize teh black-winged thing in 2 and 3 when it showed up in earlier photos - it had to have the Sophies added before I recognized it as a transformed Howl.

5) Demon-form Inuyasha (3,4)

6) Girl-type Rock Lee (3). #6 is a pretty good Juri and Nanami.

7) 4, 5, and 6 are closer-up pics of the Saiyuki group from earlier. (Continued on the first 3 pic of the next page)

8) Look at pics 3 and 4 of this group (heh - no clue of the game, but it's a Hyung-Tae Kim one). See how the fabric doesn't wrinkle or reflect in shiny ways and how they are all tailored? The fabric has substance. And it's not too tight, either - they put enough give in it. Compare that to ALL of the Saiyuki pics. I long for the day when I see a Saiyuki group that's put that much money and time into the costume. (People tend not to make Sanzo's robes as voluminous as they need to be, and as a result, they end up looking skimpy and too small.)

9) A I correct in saying the family that cosplays together, stays together? (5) XD

The demon Inu is a guy on my friends list, [livejournal.com profile] endymion. He also used to do really nice Mamoru (from Sailormoon) cosplay.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just happy that he's got the pants right - I've seen way too many people not put enough fabric in them. XD

[identity profile] maxineofarc.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe the game is "Magna Carta."

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool, thanks. :)

[identity profile] seiyojin.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Err, is that Jesus on the Karasu page? The one with the, umm, angel? *Wonders if he's there to battle the Darth Vader from the Demon-form Inuyasha page... Would be a battle I'd pay to see*

If I was to actually cosplay I think I'd want to put some real effort in to it first instead of just buying a cheap wig and some £1.99 kids face paint set. I think I'd also choose a character that I also resembled in some size or shape too... Though good for anyone having a go anyway :)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Looks like it. And not the same as the Buddy Jesus guy in my other post, either, although there's a superficial resemblance.

That's my problem - I want to put too much time and money into it. What I really want is a character with fancy 19th-century clothing that I can do. I look good in a corset. I *don't* look good in most of this other stuff.

[identity profile] seiyojin.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
That Jesus, always getting around, like he has something really important to say! *stops with the jokes in case I end up unintentionally insulting someone* Religion, I love it, it creates hours of amusement and deep whirry noises as my brain tries to make it all work neatly XD

Mmm, 19th century clothing. Even though I've never done the corset thing (I like to breath) I do have to admit that if I didn't think I'd be terribly uncomfortable I would give them a go. I shall keep an eye out for Victorian Era anime :) And I don't think any of the other stuff looks good on 99.5% of people. Especially the "dipped in glitter and wearing tinfoil" kind of costumes.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
The corset thing isn't too bad if it's properly fitted and if you breathe from the chest and not the belly. :) *And* provided you're only taking 1-2" off your waist and not any more unless you've been wearing them for a good long time - the corset smooths things and rearranges them, rather than making them smaller. XD

[identity profile] maxineofarc.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't find corsets uncomfortable at all as long as you know what to expect. Have you looked at "Victorian Romance Emma?" I haven't seen much of it, but there might be a gown in there for you somewhere.

[identity profile] matildarose.livejournal.com 2005-08-22 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Ooo! oo! If you want Victorian Era anime, try Victorian Romance Emma. It's basically a love story between a maid and a man of higher status (nothing we haven't seen before) but it's well-done.

And it has a sexy, sexy Indian prince. Hakim. *swoon*

[identity profile] elfiepike.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
at fanime there was a woman in the costume contest with a really cool pikachu costume, all renaissance style and stuff. very neat. so you could always do reinterpretations! :D

re: the paper bags over the heads, the only thing i can think is that it's an indie visual kei band, seeing as the whole group is jrockers. (sadly, i've been out of that scene for too long to be of more help than that.)

[identity profile] mscongeniality.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
That's why I'm considering a cosplay of Sophia from Last Exile. She's got an Elizabethan style dress and I look pretty damned good in Elizabethan. the colors wouldn't be bad for me, either.

Also, I wouldn't need a wig so that helps with the 'not looking like a half-assed goob'.

[identity profile] chibi-nasu.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh...I'm doing a Saiyuki cosplay mid-2006... considering my absolute hatred for anything broadcloth, I hope I can produce Sanzo robes that have actual substance and texture :3

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Some fabric that flows well, isn't shiny, and with enough fabric in the body of the robe that you can *see* the drape. :D And with the seam tension adjusted properly for the thread and fabric so that you don't get that visible line of stitching around all the hems. XD

[identity profile] chibi-nasu.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Fabric choice is one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to cosplay...

I understand that it is sometimes difficult to get the "perfect" colour fabric for a particular costume. I understand that completely (surprisingly, getting the correct colour fabric for Shigure's [Fruits Basket] kimono was incredibly difficult). And I understand, as well, that broadcloth and baroque satin offer a wide variety of colours. I know that said broadcloth and baroque satin are cheap...But please, DO NOT EVER USE EITHER FOR THE BASE OF YOUR COSTUME!!! Unless you like looking wearing clothing that is not textured or incredibly shiny and reflects light in the strangest ways. And, of course, the fact that you look like you just rolled all over the convention center with how wrinkled the costume is going to look as soon as you move.

*lol* One of my other LJ friends went to Otakon, and I find this novel (I guess that's the word).

XD Put some extra-loud J-rock on, get someone who hasn't taken a shower in 3 days to sit next to you, flash a camera nto your eyes on a frequent basis, don't eat anything but Pocky for 24 hours, don't sleep for 36, scream at the top of your lungs for a while, spend all your money on plastic crap, then go look at the pictures from this site and it's JUST LIKE GOING TO THE CON.

*heh* >^___^<
I think I'll just stick with going to FleetCon in September.....Because I currently have no pocky with me ;-;

I think I love you a little.

"the family that cosplays together, stays together"
that's awesome! XD

[identity profile] rushthatspeaks.livejournal.com 2005-08-22 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you seen the pics of our Saiyuki cosplay group? The Homura cloak is a thing of beauty. www.geocities.com/sassafrass_boston.

[identity profile] rushthatspeaks.livejournal.com 2005-08-22 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
... actually, about half of those ARE my Saiyuki cosplay group. My wife is the good Yaone and my housemate Thrud is the Gojyo with the contacts. Hakuryu didn't get in the pics, dammit. I ought to have been in there as Chin Isou but was ill.

[identity profile] rushthatspeaks.livejournal.com 2005-08-22 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and the Dokugakuji in the back and the Homura are us. The others aren't, and, well, aren't the way we'd've done it.

Here via my friendsfriends list or something like that--anyway, yes, picture #1 on item 4 is from Princess Nine. Hee! Good to see--there aren't v. many cosplayers for that one (& when I used to cosplay, I think I was one of the first P9 cosplayers, & it won me a copy of the last volume before it was released, too, heh).

That transformed Howl is awesome.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-08-27 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, cool. XD

Heh - a friend of mine uses the "little but fierce" quote in her icon and sig and seeing your username threw me for a minute there, because I was all "You never told me you cosplayed, Rachel!" XD
littlebutfierce: (little but fierce cally)

[personal profile] littlebutfierce 2005-08-27 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehehe! I love that quote. Also I love that this icon wasn't made for me; someone just posted it on a BSG community & Cally is one of my favorite characters & ... yeah. Love the quote. ^_^
