Reading Friday

Because I didn't bother to post on Reading Wednesday. :D

I seem to be into ghost stories right now, and inadvertently hit the mother lode of Gothic ghost story recommendations in the form of the "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" section on a book that a user on AskMetafilter linked to. I don't think I sent myself the sample of that book, but found a bunch of others and sent those.

After reading through a bunch of samples, the first one I've bought is The Haunting of Maddy Clare. It's got 4 stars, but I didn't read the reviews because I've noticed a tendency for reviewers to spoil the gotcha in books like this, so I'm taking it on faith. I'm not very far into it yet, but am enjoying it so far, mostly because I have mentally cast the actress who plays the shy Dot in the Australian TV series Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (based on the Phryne Fisher series of books) as Miss Piper, the main character.

And it's hitting some good buttons so far: Scarred and Emotionally Tortured WWI Veterans! Shy Withdrawn Heroine with Some Sense that will hopefully Discover Her Inner Strength! Reclusive Country House full of Mystery! Here's hoping it lives up to that.

If you are into ghost stories and/or noir (noir ghost stories, yes), you might want to check out Salsa Nocturna by DJ Older. Various people whose opinions I respect have been hyping it, but alas my copy got soaked by a leaky waterbottle on the subway the day I was going to start reading it. >.>

And if you have already seen/read it, and I managed to miss that, apologies. ^_^;
