Otakon cosplayers

Otakon's going on, and I'm poking through A Fan's View looking for people I know (haven't found any yet). They've got the Friday cosplayers up now. From what I understand, the Death Note group photo shoot was supposed to happen this morning (Sat), so maybe there'll be some photos from that up by this evening.

1) No clue if these are just Elegant Gothic Lolita-type costuming, J-rockers, or from anything, but I thought they were nice. I would just like to point out that the sheen from satin looks cheap under most flash-camera conditions and a more matte blue would have made that much nicer, especially since the black really soaked up the light.

2) Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper, Al? XD (dude I respect anyone who attmepts to build armor and manages to walk around without it falling off - that takes engineering.)

3) Pretty good Trigun grouping.

4) He just looks so happy!

5) Girl-type Vash. I think she's managed to get the facial expression spot on.

6) OK, yeah, Ichigo is one of the easiest costumes going if you're willing to dye your hair, but it does require you accessorize yourself with Soul Reapers to be recognizable.

7) Winry vs. Ed, in duplicate.

8) You can ID the Bleach cosplayers by the color scheme.

9) It's Sai! IN, unfortunatley, satin. (I don't care how inexpensive it is, it looks BAD in camera flash pics!!)

10) This is a costume for which you WANT red-eye from the flash.

11) OK, I love it - the kid from Paranoia Agent! (Except for being happy instead of malicious, but tha'ts OK by me. XD)

12) BWAH-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA OK, it's a stupid joke, but it snuck up on me out of left field. (If you don't know the Trigun characters, you won't get it.)

13) I don't know what this is from, but it's pretty nice.

14) Rose of Versailles, at a guess? Very nice, though.

15) Normally I hate wings, but someone put a lot of time into these and they look very nice.

16) I gotta give the guy on the right props for the hair. XD

That was only Friday morning. There's so much more...

That snaky-thing looks really familiar--I'm gonna take a guess and say it's the Basilisk from Petshop of Horrors.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-08-20 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
No, the Basilisk is darker and has different hair, I think - I remember seeing a really good Basilisk at A-Kon a couple of years ago that looked absolutely nothing like that one. (what, go to the other side of the room to the bookshelf and check? God forbid!)

[identity profile] cerusee.livejournal.com 2005-08-20 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's mostly the shape of the hair and the slinkiness that's making me think that--a lot of the details are certainly different--but the Basilisk isn't black in the manga (I did an image seach on Google, and found what I think you're talking about; this thing?--http://zplus.clubsnap.org/images/cosplay/20031227Fans-tasia/index2.html), so it might be a looser, greener interpretation of the costume than the A-Kon one. I can't quite remember her dress in the manga, actually, but her hair was definitely pale, not black.

If you take "looser, greener interpretation" to mean "a completely different character design with vaguely similar hair," maybe. :D

I had to break down and go to the other side of the room and scan: From the manga. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/telophase/32ab7116.jpg) Not a bit of fur there.

Thank you for the can. I would have liked to check, but my books are all packed, and the image search didn't turn up any manga references.

If you take "looser, greener interpretation" to mean "a completely different character design with vaguely similar hair," maybe. :D

Exactly! And hey, shiny green=reptilian, right?

(My faith in this is based mainly on my con experiences, where I have correctly guessed the origins of countless weird and crappy costumes. It never fails to amaze my sister.

Me: Hey look, it's Miaka!
Her: Where?
Me: See, that girl with the ribbons.
Her: But she's a redhead.
Me: Yes, but it's Miaka anyway. Her uniform is brown and she's got ribbons.
Her: Hey, she's posing with a Chichiri. I guess it is Miaka.

And then I spent a couple of minutes being unduly proud of myself before we do it again. I've seen costumes like this before, where the details are completely wrong, but it does turn out to be the thing I guessed based on a gestalt impression.

OTOH, I could be completely wrong. There's a whole lot of characters I wouldn't recognize if they pinched me on the ass.)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-08-20 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
:D There's a ton I don't know, and I usually just assume they're from a game if I don't recognize them, but there's tons of anime I haven't seen.

You know, I havne't seen anyone in s-CRY-ed costumes yet, and I think I'd recognize the uniforms... Hm.

I was being impressed wiht the general level of costuming there, but then again it's one of the biggest of the cons, so it's going to attract a higher calibre of costuming than your average con.

#12

HEE!

[identity profile] matildarose.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
WOOHOO! Lil' Slugger/Shounen Bat! XD

[identity profile] matildarose.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
BTW. #14 is Final Fantasy 6, Amano style. Celes in her opera gown and Setzer escorting her. Both very well done.

[identity profile] matildarose.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Hehe. This is probably the only time I'll ever be able to point out the identity of a character. ;_;

The hair! It's so perfect!

I'm going to Dragon Con this year and I hope we get a flock of Bleach shinigami to roam the halls like geese like the flock of Stormtroopers we always get. (BLACK & WHITE DEATHMATCH!)

I wonder if the wing-girl is from Haibane Renmei.

The Jewish Wolfwood hath KILLED ME DEAD.

#12 absolutely killed me ded. Best joke costume ever.

It blows my mind to see the time, money, and effort some of these people put into their costumes. Wow.
