This weekend, Toby and I dropped by a niche shop that we'd been intending to for a while, just to see what it was. It's a shop that I didn't expect to survive in this economy and in this place for very long, but it's been here over a year: a gourmet olive oil store.
The shop sells infused olive oils and basalmic vinegars, flavored salts, and olive oil soap. The oil and vinegar are in small steel barrels and you can taste them. When you decide to buy, you grab one of three differently sized bottles, tap the barrel, and fill the bottle. The store owner (the oiler, as he introduced himself) caps it for you and puts a sleeve on the top and htis it with a heat gun so the lid doesn't pop off on the way home.
We ended up with a sage and mushroom olive oil and a Sicilian lemon vinegar (IIRC), which when combined made a fantastic-tasting vinaigrette, and the realization that this shop would probably supply quite a lot of our Christmas-present needs.
