Someone here's bound to know - where on Win2K do I go to remove all those annoying little programs that want to start up when you log on, like MSN Messenger and stuff? I've poked about in the Startup Menu, according to the Help, but can't find it. MSN Messenger is about to drive me crazy popping up all the time and starting to install on this computer every time I restart.

Go to Start -> Run
Type msconfig

Check the startup and the boot.ini tabs. On the general tab, make sure when you're done that Selective Startup is selected.

Thanks. WIll do that once this particular process finishes.

Might want to check in Start > Settings > Add/Remove Programs. See if they're installed there, and remove them if they are. But if they're attempting to install themselves, you might have to go into the registry and screw around there, which is always messy.

Check. Will do.

You have to use regedit. Under a couple of those first five folders, look for:

Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> CurrentVersion -> Run (or RunOnce, or Run Services)

Just delete what you recognize and don't want.

OK, cool, thanks.

I am going to become a Windows expert yet, despite my best efforts. XD

I must have missed that post, but if you need any mountain pictures I've got some really awsome ones that I took in southwestern Colorado last month.

Useful program critter: WinPatrol, which lets you disable programas from Startup. I find it most useful for stopping spyware from installing themselves and stopping Quicktime and RealPlayer from trying to install themselves in Startup as they insist on doing every time I run them. Ad-Aware also has an add-on to disable Windows Messenger, although I'm not sure it works in Windows 2K.

Oh, nice. :)

That machine is TOTALLY FUCKED anyway, and I shall perhaps detail a bit of my day at it in another journal entry tonight, but I am going to sit back and enjoy my lovely updated, patched, firewalled, protected computer with the speed of lightning (er, comparatively) for a while.

I feel so light on this machine. *pats it*
