When we replaced the small rug in the middle of the bedroom floor, our cat took months---at least half a year---to walk on it. She would walk around the perimeter, staring fearfully at this strange interloper in her realm. The rug on the bedroom floor is a very important part of her personal territory, we realized. She gets patted there a lot, and she keeps a couple of catnip toys there, and so she could not deal with the idea that it was no longer orange and stripey and rectangular but green and white and rounded.
Sora views with distrust floor coverings that are fuzzy, like bath mats or this carpet (it's more of a fur than a true shag). He'll only step on them if he absolutely cannot avoid it. This morning his catnip-stuffed quail was in the middle of the new rug (I assume pushed off the chair by the other cat), and I watched him pace the perimeter of the rug a bit then streeeetch to place one paw on it, streeetch to place the other paw as close to the quail as he could and then, overcome by the novelty of the experience, lift it back up and attempt to find someplace, anyplace, other than the rug to put it, and ended up backing off without getting his quail.
As I am an evil cat owner, the quail is currently occupying the exact center of the rug.

Of course, now it's embedded with cat hair.
