BPAL review: Spellbound

Silk Road didn't last very long - an hour or so - so I decided to try another of the imps that arrived today.

Spellbound

BPAL description: From the Love Potions collection. Perfectly enchanting! An irresistibly sexual, utterly rapturous blend of three roses, radiant amber, and sensual red musk.

In vial: Floral, but not a light one. Rose. Reminds me a bit of whatever it was my grandmother wore. I had a perfume-making kit as a kid, and the rose smelled exactly like the top notes in this. I can also sense a bit of musk underneath. The notes don't blend very well.

Wet: A bit of rose, but there's something strong with a hint of bitterness - either the musk or the amber (but I don't know what amber smells like yet). The musk is coming out a bit more strongly as it dries.

Dry: Strong musky rose - almost like roses that are starting to wilt and go sour. And it makes my head feel kind of funny, so this is getting washed off ASAP. Strong, strong, strong.

Notes: Cat gave one sniff then turned her head away, and I think we share the same opinion. This is really strong and I think I can safely say that musks do not love me - they get sort of bitter. I'll have to try some other rose thing to see if I can stand roses, but this one is not a keeper. It was so strong that even after washing with soap and water and then cleaning my wrists off with alcohol, I could still smell it, so I slathered Neo-Tokyo on to kill it while I slept.

Never has my BPAL icon been more appropriate.

Oooh, Spellbound was old lady perfume on me. Like, the kind where the lady wears too much and doesn't even realize it...

Heh. At this point in time, I would have been happy if it was merely old-lady perfume. XD

Spellbound was absolutely fetid on me. I had to wash it off, too, but I have a friend for whom it is the best scent ever. Red musk is a pretty love it or hate it note, so that's probably the problem -- I've found that I can wear "pale musk" or "honey musk", though.

After washing twice and rubbing my wrists with alcohol twice and my morning shower, I can still detect very faint traces. Luckily, the last remaning traces aren't bad - if the thing smelled like this to start with, it would have been great, but ... feh.

Meant to add - I'm in the stage of getting a bunch of random things and trying them, and neither the white musk nor the red musk have worked, so I'm leaning away from the entire musk family. Which means that I'm leery of Peitho, which is one of the two I've got left to try, because of its "warm musk," although I think I may like everything else in it.

The only red musk-containing blend that works on me is Lampades, but that's because it has the cramberries and lilies in it. If it didn't, I'm sure it'd be repulsive like every other blend containing red or black musk.

Surprisingly, I can wear Lust, which only has a few other notes besides the red musk. But yeah, usually either one of those dooms a scent for me.
