THE MYSTERY OF THE RUINED SHIRT

All right, we've got a mystery here.

The known facts:

1) At lunch I went outside of the building, and as I was walking under the closest tree, I heard a loud bang somewhere above me, as of the sort of firework you can purchase from a fireworks stand before the 4th of July and New Year's. A tiny bit of shredded-up material drifted down, that I thought might be leaf bits from the tree above me, as the wind was blowing at the time. I also thought the bang might have to do with the soil sampling drilling they're doing around teh building today, in prep for construction (they have to go on the order of 50 feet down and ahve a truck that looks a bit like a mini-oil rig).

I looked around at the time, and saw no one acting in any way suspicious. Nobody was near me, ad nobody looked like they'd heard the bang.

2) About 2 hours later, after I come back from lunch and am working at my desk (still standing!) I happed to look down at my right sleeve and WTF?! there's two bright pink spots on it. I can see the fabric weave through it - it looks like they were hit by bleach or something similar. And there's holes starting to develop - the center of the spots looks weird, and as I touch them, the threads fray and part. There are two similar spots on the body of my shirt, a little farther down, one of which frays and the other doesn't.

3) I go to the bathroom to rinse off the spots, to sto the bleach or whatever it is from spreading, or at least fraying any more of my shirt and WHAT THE HELL THE PINK COMES OFF! I am now left with holes in my shirt with lighter blue spots surrounding them.

4) I went outside and poked around, but could find nothing - no firework paper, nothing that would signify anything caustic happened.

5) I don't think there's any marks on my arm under the sleeve spot. There was a faint round rd spot, but I've wiped it off Just In Case and poked and prodded my arm enough that it's all red now, so can't tell. :)

6) ETA: Fact 5 -- THE PINK IS COMING BACK, 25 MINUTES AFTER I WASHED IT OFF.

I took pics BEFORE washing it off! I r SMRT! (Although not smart enough that they're not blurry)

The third image is closest to the actual color of the shirt; the rest are all weirdly exposed due to florescent lights and my phone.

Does ANYONE have a clue what this could be?

And before anyone asks: I ahve reported it to my superiors who ahve asked me to call campus Risk Management and file a report, so there's a record of it, and to see if they can figure out what was going on.

o.O No clue. That is so bizarre. O.o

Looks kinda like Javex, but it is such a strange happening o_O

Yup! If the students were on campus, I'd assume that someone made a bleach bomb, but it's between semesters right now.

[identity profile] vom-marlowe.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Weird. Could it be something like a draino bomb? Not bleach itself, but a thicker type of substance?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe? No idea. I talked to the Risk Management guy, and it must be a really boring week over there with the students gone, as he told me it was the most interesting (and weird) thing that's happened all week and thanked me! He's supposed to be dropping by to poke around, but he's got less than an hour before we close...

[identity profile] vom-marlowe.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the only thing I can think of that would be available and would stick around after being wetted down with regular water. So strange. But interesting!

Pity about your shirt, though.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a new shirt, too! I'd only worn it 2 or 3 times! *cries*

(Ah well: cheering myself up by remembering that we're going to see the Avengers again tomorrow morning at a dinner-cinema that does a breakfast special for their 9AM movies, then going to try out a Korean juk place with a friend afterward.)

[identity profile] movingfinger.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
What's dinner cinema for breakfast like? Do you sit at tables (tablecloths, maybe, to reduce the noise level)? Is there lighting to make eating less hazardous?

It sounds like a really good idea: Movie! With waffles and bacon!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It is this theatre (http://telophase.livejournal.com/1885190.html), the new Movie Tavern near downtown, with cushy big seats with individual tables attached to the chair arms. The lighting tends to be pretty much the same as regular theatres, so you have to be careful exactly what you're sticking your fork into. :) And this is the breakfast menu (http://movietavern.com/breakfast-and-a-flick/). We haven't tried out the breakfast showings yet, so it'll be an adventure.

The regular food tends toward the eat-with-your-hands type: sandwiches, burgers, pizza, chicken fingers, etc. so I'm not entirely sure how the utensils are going to sound. Maybe we'll get plastic?

My imagination is consistently more elegant than real life.

[identity profile] movingfinger.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
What is the shirt made of? Is it cotton, synthetic, a blend, more one or another...

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
95% rayon/5% spandex. This one (http://www.kiyonna.com/plus-size-clothing/Separates/21121802) in blue. (And you see the price, which is why I'm TRIPLY ANNOYED! If I bother to replace it, though, I'm going to get one a size down as it felt a little large on me.)

I'm thinking that a lot of caustics will melt sythetics. So will heat or hot chemical reactions (which tend to be causitics).

The Drano bomb suggestion above seems like a good explanation, but you didn't see anyone doing anything and no remnants have been found in the area. If you had any Drano around you could test it on the shirt, which is damaged anyway...

But the reaction of your shirt hints that there should be marks on the grass, plants, or even maybe on pavement, if this was a wet explosive.

Is it possible that something inside (or on top of) the building splattered outward through an open window? If the "closest tree" is that close...

Otherwise, the explosion happened because you wore a shirt specifically designated for Saturday on Friday and the cosmos had to warn you not to screw around with that stuff.

After I reported it to him, the building director of the library went up on to the roof to see if he could see anything there, but saw nothing. Admittedly, it was two hours after the fact so we wouldn't necessarily expect to see anything. I also double-checked for anything that looked like splatters on the pavement when I left for the day, nope. At least I know I'm not totally crazy as it turns out the assistant dean heard the bang as well, and looked out her window and saw me crossing the street, but saw nothing else also. (The building director saw me as well, but was wearing earphones so didn't hear the bang.)

There's a one-story brick shed next to the 3-story library building right there - I think I may ask the building manager if he looked over the side at the roof of the shed. It occurs to me that if someone was throwing bleach/Drano bombs off the library onto the shed's roof, it might explain that, and why only a few droplets made it off the roof.

That's going to be my current working hypothesis!

Weird! Rayon takes dye and bleach really easily, so I can easily see it bleaching out from bleach, Drano, or another strong base. Not much to do about the damage except try to cover it. Would it be too twee to embroider little flowers on the holes? That's my go-to method for fixing holes in knits.

"Tie-dye" it with bleach into interesting patterns?

[identity profile] awamiba.livejournal.com 2012-05-20 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Bird poop. I'm being totally serious. There's a kind of bird in our area that poops bright pinkish-purple synthetic-fabric eating poop. I've had a skirt and two shirts (one of them Nick's) hit with it and twice there's been pink and then holes (the third time just the everloving pink). I have no answer for the bang. Maybe it scared the bird?

Somewhere a mad scientist is cackling over the successful test of his Acid Bomb-inator and vowing that he'll show them all.
