Currently reading: Bradamant's Quest, by Ruth Berman. Bradamant, the woman knight from Orlando Furioso, grieving her husband, is given a quest by Oberon, king of the fairies: gather some magical talismans that have been scattered across the land by various members of her family and return them to Oberon.

I'm about 30% in right now, and it's quite engaging. It's episodic, and at least two of the chapters were published as standalone short stories. I haven't read Orlando Furioso, so everything I'm encountering is new and I haven't the slightest idea what is Berman's creation and what comes from the original, if anything. Looking forward to finishing it!

OMG you are like the third person I know who is reading that. I should pick it up. (I LOVE Orlando F.)

(There's a movie of OF? How? It's like fifteen gazillion times the length of Paradise Lost.)

Awesome. I'm always game for more Bradamante adventures.

Oh, that makes more sense. It's an awesome movie, btw (and a pretty good book) -- you should watch it.

The Song of Roland! Now that really is a rare mythology for English speakers to use - I keep waiting for new interpretations of the Dietrich of Bern mythology, too (which was based on Westgothic Theoderich as far as I know - the guy who died and they diverted a stream to bury him).

I have heard of the name as Bradamante before. Also - the kindle edition is quite cheap, so I'm sold.

I'd heard of the Song of Roland but never read it, although it's one of those things I keep intending to. :)

I just went to Wikipedia and scanned the entries on Orlando Furioso and Bradamante and confirmed that yes, the bits in the book that sound like they're referring to a prequel are, indeed, referring to OF. So far the book hasn't tackled the topic of Bradamante's husband's conversion to Christianity, might be interesting if it does. We'll see!

I sent the sample to my Kindle some time back and compeltely forgot why. After I read it last night, I went back to Amazon to see if I could remember how I'd come across it and while I didn't remember that, I noted the Kindle price, which sold me, too. :)

You sent me on a multi-hour quest to find this on GoodReads, find out that the Ruth Berman of the animal books is not the same as Ruth Berman of this book or Ruth A. Berman of Tel Aviv University, then going on a disassociating, associating rampage, Hah!

Also she's one of the ur-fans starting way back and she's gotten lots of awards for poetry! And there even was some recent humoristic paranormal romance spoof poetry to be had http://www.silverblade.net/content/?p=592
