My mother, on the phone to me the other day: "Why didn't you tell me how much I'd like Sherlock?"

:)

She's only seen episode 1 and part of episode 2 of series 1 so far. I told her that I liked eps 1 and 3 of that season but there was too much Yellow Peril in ep 2. And then we agreed that while that was certainly a theme in the original Holmes canon, it was an aspect that didn't need to be resurrected for the reboot.

*Thank* you! I have talked to lots of folks about this reboot, expressing your concerns about Ep 2, and everyone told me I was imagining things.

Huh! I think most everyone I know who talked about it mentioned that! (OTOH, maybe I just remember the ones who mentioned it and not the ones who didn't.) But yes: I found it obvious and off-putting.

Word about episode 2. I kinda was like ooooooookay, I understand that that may have been in the original material...but seriously?

Yup. :(

Yeah. There were certain parts of ep. 2 that I liked, but all of them had to do with the development of Sherlock and John's characters and their relationship. None of it had to do with the plot, because the plot was kinda...yeah. :/

As you said, that sort of thing was very much a part of the original stories, but some of the original stories were seriously, appallingly, blindingly racist. So that's no excuse.

Ep. 3 is AWESOME though, and maybe still my favorite (though series 2 kicked ass)! I can't wait to hear what your mom thinks of Moriarty!

I'm interested in her thoughts on Moriarty, too! She especially liked the snappy-patter dialog and how they used text on the screen to make the action of someone staring at their phone interesting.

So much word on S1E2! It's the only season one episode I've never rewatched. I've been watching Season 2 and while one episode has some problematic elements, overall I am enjoying it immensely.

I'm afraid the Irene Adler episode in S2 has finished what the Yellow Peril episode started- I won't be watching any more. It was a fun concept, but I just can't stomach some of the problematic elements anymore.
