I'm not convinced it's a disaster at all. The first thing I learnt about the Mona Lisa is 'it's spooky. The eyes follow you' and it strikes me that giving the viewer a slighly different perspective - making the picture look different whether you view it from the left or from the right - would create, or at least greatly support, exactly that effect.

The perspective and horizon lines as they are make my eyes travel to her face more, so for me it's good technique. *g*
