Thanks. Huge hassle, but not a tragedy, at least, as we'd been doing weekly backups and had, just the night before, switched to daily and done a full backup then. And Toby's managed to coax the HD into booting up (requires careful arrangement of the wires and suitable swearing, it seems from my point of view) to run yet ANOTHER backup, this time burned on to DVDs, and so I can de-authorize various accounts, get my Firefox bookmarks, and whatnot.
And there's a new computer on order! Toby bought out his service contract (i.e. gave me some money towards it so he wouldn't have to do tech support on it ever again!)
Short version: practically none, as we'd been making weekly backups to an external drive, and just last night had changed it to daily and made another backup because the computer was acting funny. And Toby's pretty sure that he can get the HD to boot one more time tonight, so we can deauthorize what services need to be deauthorized (iTunes, Adobe, Audible, etc.) , list out what software needs to be replaced (as I'm looking at moving back to Mac), etc.
I'd been looking at getting a new computer in a year or so; this just moves the timeline up.
