I was reading an article on the history of silicone breast implants, which mentioned an 1874 book of beauty advice called The ugly-girl papers. Intrigued, I went looking for it, and I also found an historical New York Times review from 1874, which calls it "loathsome". Just a reminder that wacky things from the past may have been considered wacky back then, too. :)
(Which didn't stop me from downloading the Kindle version of the book, as I'm curious about the various things it suggests one do to achieve beauty.)
