Warning!

Warning! Interior design discussed here!

ETA: My webspace appears to have gone down temporarily - I'll post the pics elsewhere and provide links so you can see them. Come back in a few minutes and see!

ETA2: Click on the imgur.com links if the pictures aren't showing up.

So we've got, well, purchased at least as most of it is to be delivered later, the major furniture items for the living room. I have a vague feel in my head that I want of "1930s adventure club" (note that's a theme, not a theme park!) and I rather think our motley collection of stuff will work with that*. This is what we have/have coming:

* Please don't tell me it won't, actually, as I will then collapse into a little ball of stress.

Already own two of these chairs. They look mid-century modern from the front, but have that 1930s swoopy feel from the side, and I was cuing off of that. They're also darker than this one.

Already own this coffee table, which I love. I especially love that it's vaguely reminiscent of East Asian design without being all O HAI I'M JAPANESE/CHINOISERIE!

Already have this, which is a photo of the Italian team from the 1908 New York-Paris Auto Race. (that would be New York to Paris via Asia - 6 teams entered, only 3 completed, the Italians came in 3rd.)

On the way, this sofa. It's taking a long time because we got it in this color, which was a special order, but YAY didn't cost any more, and we still got the sale price. I really do like the traditional club/library look, and think this updates it enough that the chairs won't look out of place.

And these chairs are also on their way. They're wingback-ish recliners. XD I was considering barrel chairs, as they had that 1930s feel, but couldn't find ones that I would condemn our RPG friends to sit in for six straight hours when they came over. So we went for the wingback look. The fabric actually has a bit of a pattern in it, unlike what it looks here.

And two facing walls will be lined with this sort of thing, full of all our books. Only one's got the glass doors on it, but we'll be alternating the half-size and full-size widths. These are being delivered today.

Things to look for:

a carpet, which needs to be about 8x10' or 11', and I'd sort of like it to look Turkish/Persian. Although my taste is larger than my budget - the ones I've seen that I liked are on the order of $800+ and that's out of the question. So, still looking.

side tables. We poked around Ashley Furniture last night (I've got a Living Social coupon, which gives us $100 of furniture for $25.) We found two tables we kind of liked. They don't match, but I think a mix-n-match thing will work better than matchy-matchy.

lamps. I like to be able to see to read, thank you. :)

STUFF! ACCESSORIES! We've got a niche begging to be filled! And a mantlepiece! I'm sort of thinking stuff like old maps, maybe one of the 1920s/30s car race posters from Allposters.com. We saw a smallish globe at Ashley's which looked old while at the same time having up-to-date countries. (There was a smaller one, but it had Zaire, not the Dem. Rep. of Congo, which makes it a no for me.)

The plastic penguin we own stays on the hearth. I rather like him.

Recliners! Really. They look so not clunky. Does that lower part have a hidden footrest or what? How recliny are they?

My mom may be in the market for a new one or two---hers are a bit low for her now.

I really, really like the look you have going here. You do need a few carefully chosen pieces of memorabilia---did you pick up any good posters/maps in England? (BTW you know you can order stuff from the London Underground store online, they may have suitable art...)

Just thought, as I ran through my vintage & repro map sources in my mind, of a couple other things for you to sniff out:

Museum of London, the one in the Guildhall, used to (possibly still does) sell custom copies of prints; I got mine when I was there, but they MAY do mail, I don't know? Anyway, what I bought were copies of Wenceslas Hollar's engravings of London before and after the Great Fire. I suggest the England stuff because you were just there. The copies are done on high quality acid-free paper. That is an awesome library to visit btw.

Old National Geographic maps! Yes! Many of them are excellent and, for example, the two-sided Arctic/Antarctic map is still completely accurate. Not all NG maps have colorful pictures of people on them (you know the look I mean---too classroomy for your use, I suspect). The ones without national boundaries are possibly more interesting---for your "look" you could see if you could get Australia, Southeast Asia, even India topo maps.

Topo maps from the USGS, either quadrants or of specific parks/areas you have visited/like, are inexpensive and readily available---REI sells them, at the very least.

Axis Maps has some cool maps which are art---typography used to represent places. (I do think strongly one should hang maps which are meaningful not just mappy, though. http://store.axismaps.com/ with blog at http://www.axismaps.com/blog/2011/05/london-low-life/

Maps with tours marked were included in the back of the WPA state guides. If your library has one with the map still in it, you could have it copied at a large-scale copy place. That would dovetail very nicely with your '30's look and theme, and the maps are really great fun because all the roads are still there---though many are transformed, some have not changed much.

Thanks for the chair info. I hate those headrest bumps. The ones on airplane seats are just the. worst. for causing neckache. Macy's is excellent, accessible and familiar to Mom. I will tow her round there for a sit test.

Do not get an expensive carpet if you have cats.

If they don't mess with them via claws, vomit, and other substances, they are hair magnets. You'll beat the carpets to death trying to keep them clean.

I'm thinking that brushed aluminum & nickel would go well with the vibe you've got going.

I will also add: do not get a one-color carpet if you have cats. :) Patterns hide the staining much better! We're probably going to end up with one of the $200-300 ones from Lowe's or Home Depot, really.

Toby mentioned to his mother that we were looking for a carpet, and she inexplicably went on a rant about carpet stores, telling him over and over not to go to one, because they were expensive and ripoffs. I have no idea where she got the idea that we were thinking of a carpet store, because we already KNOW they're expensive!

We've got a chrome/brushed aluminum thing going a bit in the media room. Most of the hardware in the house is oiled brass, although that's in the kitchen and bathrooms more than anything else.

Yeah, Home Depot or even a Big Lots/Job Lots store, if you have one around. It won't last as long as a 'nice' one but you have two cats, so. :D

I would love to be able to help - but my recommendations would be for online shopping in Germany, so....

Would you eventually take some pictures of the interior of your new home? I loved the series you did on that flat you moved to - the one that had the garage below the flat.
