Good information on what to check on your sewing machine before taking it in to the shop.
(I once got lectured by a shop owner, after I brought my machine in for service, for buying a machine from "Wal-Mart" [note: it was from Target thankyouverymuch] because they're so shoddily made. No amount of explanation that I literally use it less than once a year so it's not worth dropping $500+ on a machine from a professional place made a dent. I'm certainly not taking my machine back there for fixing again, and I'm definitely not buying from them if I do decide to upgrade!)
