Kiva.org!

If you haven't tried kiva.org -- it's a micro-lending thing -- you can get a chance to make a $25 loan to someone in the developing world for free for a short time: http://kiva.org/invitedby/stephanie2960

(I get a t-shirt if 5 of you take up the offer, but I don't push Kiva for the swag, I push it because it's a pretty awesome service.)

Limited quantities available - let me know if it stops working. :)

I'm bewildered; I cannot find any evidence that I had a Kiva account previously, and the meter shows the promotion is still available; but as soon as I try to check out after creating an account, it no longer shows the credit, and wants to charge me for the full value of the loan + donation.

Huh. Has it fixed itself since you posted? (If it hasn't, the only thing I can say is to contact Kiva tech support and ask them. :/)

Hmm! I went back in, and this time the field was longer; I used a different email address, and everything seems to have gone through fine. I also notice that the number of available free loans is higher than it was, so maybe there was an issue and they had to reset?

Anyway, looks like I'm good to go! (would it be gauche of my to post my own pimping link to my LJ? I know there's some overlap in our friends groups, but not total...?)

Huh, strange. At least it went through this time!

Pimp it if ya want to! :D

That's awesome! I've taken the offer.

I second this promotion! Kiva is awesome. I put in some money a couple of years ago, and since then I've reloaned that money over and over and over again so that the good my donation has done has been multiplied six times over.

Give a man a fish and he'll eat today. Teach a man to fish and he'll eat tomorrow. Loan a man a fish while you are teaching him, and he'll eat both days and you can give someone else a fish tomorrow. Or something like that.
