Article in the Dallas Observer about A-Kon: http://blogs.dallasobserver.com/dc9/2012/06/the_music_of_this_weekends_a-k.php Focuses more on the music scene there, as that is the reporter's beat, I gather.

I will also note that it was gossiped reported to us that at one point during the rave, pardon me, "dance," as we don't have a rave here because raves have drugs and of course we don't, that either hotel security or the cops came to the door person at the rave dance, looking for a young black man in a black shirt and black pants with chains. The door person just stared at them for a moment, and then said "Have you seen inside?"*

* For those of you not quite understanding, that describes a significant chunk of the con's attendance. It's like another alert that went out over the airwaves looking for a young white woman wearing a long blue wig and carrying a yellow plushie.

And also: Name of the Wind - FINISHED. Review: Enh. Readable, but not captivating. I'll probably pick up the sequel when I'm next in the mood for big fat fantasy, but I'm not feeling the urge to immediately read it. It helped that I knew Kvothe was a Gary Stu of Stus going in, otherwise it would probably have put me off.

In the fiction queue: Scalzi's Redshirts, Van Name's Slanted Jack*, and Burgis' Renegade Magic.

* A milSF series about man and his sentient tank. I read the first one some time ago and liked it in that popcorn-reading sort of way. Tried SJ once and wandered off a short way in, but there's a couple more later in the series that sound more interesting so I'm going to give SJ another try first.

Alas!

Alas, I have left my Kindle with its brand-new copy of Scalzi's Redshirts at my place of work.

Fortunately, I live in the future and can download it to my iPad and then sync the Kindle up to the place I left off. XD My only concern now is whether or not the charge in my Kindle will last when I read at lunch tomorrow, as it was getting perilously low.
