For years I have wondered why I might want to get a rice cooker when I can reliably successfully cook rice in a pot on the stove. No one ever told me about the cheery tune!
I like the rice cooker because I can put rice in it, hit a button, and then ignore it until it finishes, and then I can let the rice sit in it until I've got the rest of dinner done. I don't have to check the pot, adjust the heat, or let it be on the burner half the time and sitting off the burner the other half the time (I have a never-fail process...it just involves attention). It also doesn't take up a burner when I've got two other pots, one of them big, taking up space on the stove and running into each other. :D
The Zojirushi one we've got plays "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" when you start it, and a cheery little tune unfamiliar to me when it ends. My previous rice cookers merely beeped at me.
