Hearing

My mother's elderly ladycat has lost almost all her hearing. She no longer twitches her ears about at faint noises, does not hear you speak to her or the sounds of cars and animals from outside the house.

She does, however, retain the ability to hear the faint noise of the refrigerator door opening from outside, at the other end of the house, and comes running.

I believe that this is not a case of being able to hear, but is instead an innate psychic power possessed by all cats. Our cats somehow always manage to turn up when the fridge is opened, even if that requires them to scramble noisily over the tall fence to a neighbours garden. I have seen them do it. Not that I open the fridge on purpose or anything to watch the spectacle *shifty eyes*

I had an elderly (human) aunt with the same sort of selective deafness.
