Posted a link to and an excerpt from the Opening Shot editorial in The Comics Journal #269 (the Shoujo Issue) over in [livejournal.com profile] manga_talk. Nothing that anyone who's paid the least bit of attention to the manga market in the US recently will be surprised by, but it certainly attacks the big comics publishers with a vengeance.

Oh wise and great telophase...
you wouldn't happen to know where one could acquire numbers on something of this nature would you?
There must be something that keeps track of best selling manga, and how well it's stacking up to other genres...

Actually I'm sure there must be, but I'm an idiot and can't find it anywhere.
Little help?

Not sure offhand. I'd hit the comics and manga blogs, like Love Manga (http://www.manga.omoikitte.com/) (and check its links for more blogs), because they tend to post weekly sales charts if they can get their hands on them.

You might also want to try the mainstream publishers' publications-- Publishers Weekly had some very interesting statistics back in the day, if you can get access to back issues.

You know, if you need stuff that your local book emporium doesn't have... I work in a bookstore, and I am always willing to extend my discount to my peeps. We carry a just-OK selection of manga and graphic novels, but we can order a lot.

of course, that is english language only... BUT I also live right near a HUGE Kinokuniya, which is about the size of your average B&N and is filled with mostly Japanese manga... let me know if you want anything, I can ship for free, so I love to send people stuff!

Ooh, nice. I'll keep that in mind - thanks! XD

I was that little girl, many, many years ago. I think that's why shoujo struck a chord with me, because these were the comics I wanted to read growing up.
