IIRC, I was toasting one, and he was wandering around my feet meowing at me as he tends to do when I'm in the kitchen, so I held it out for him to sniff, at which time he stared wildly at it and ran away.
One of these days I'd love to see video of this sort of one, where it's quiet and still and completely harmless and he freaks out. It's slightly hard to imagine exactly how that works.
Sometimes it's not him freaking out and running, sometimes he's super-cautious about something. He did freak out at the waffle, IIRC, but for other things, he stares at it, moves his head around cautiously, and slooooowly creeps up on it. And it's caution, rather than hunting behavior, because if you make a noise or something else happens, he jumps and runs. XD
