Cats

Does anyone have s cat who chews on plastic and raffia? Do you know of any safe cat chew toys that would replicate that? Sora looooves to chew on crinkly things like that.

Kitty Hoots puts out crackler toys Sora might like. They're full of catnip and big enough for even a big kitty to properly grab and beat up, and they're sturdy and don't have any bits that can be torn off and swallowed. Cracklers have bits that make crinkly noises, to boot. Miso loves his.

Cat crinkle balls are a favorite of my cats. But I'd watch to see if your cats are inclined to tear at them after they've finished batting them around. I have to take them away from Mei after she gets bored of playing Fetch and moves on to demolition.

Kong makes a kickeroo that's fun -- the main squishy part crinkles like mad. My cats don't like them as much as the crinkle balls, but they're probably safer and can be left with cats unsupervised.

There were some crinkly heavy-duty mylar (I think) ball toys in a Christmas stocking I bought the cats at Petsmart. There are usually several kinds of annoying crinkly toys at large petstore aisles, but figuring out which one best mimics what the cat is wanting is the hard part.

Thanks! I'll have to poke through the aisles and see what there is.

We buy these sparkly crinkly ball things at Petco sometimes. They rustle like mad, but don't come apart for choking. And my cats are VERY destructive. :)

Not coming apart is good! Thanks!

Do you want something that somehow won't shed any bits ever, or something that sheds bits but the bits are digestible (for other creatures, but I'm not sure about cats)?

I'm guessing the first ... if the second was acceptable, Bunny Bytes has various crinkly chewy things for rabbits (many of which were adapted from parrot toys, which would be another possible source).

Interesting! I could research and see if the bits were digestible. Sora doesn't *seem* to be swallowing any of the plastic he find and chews on, but I'm not really willing to take the chance that he'll never do so. :)

Yeah, that's always interesting... you assume they're not eating these little plastic bits, and then you discover sparkly poo in the litterbox. So festive! :P

I have a cat that chews on plastic, and nothing I've bought her stops her. She loves easter grass, plastic bags, bubble wrap, and oddly enough--spiderwebs. She definitely swallows some of what she chews--I bought one of those Cat Genie flushing litter pans, and every so often I have to take it apart and pull out the easter grass and other strips of plastic she eats. I try to keep stuff out of her reach, but she'll settle for what she can get, and plastic is just too hard to avoid--she'll tug strips off of the trash can liner if she has to.
I thought it was the sound, and bought her a crinkle-bag santa hat, but it seems to be the texture when she's chewing, because she plays with that, but it doesn't replace her urge to chew on other plastics.
Good luck, and if you find something that works for your cat, I'd love to hear about it!

I think [livejournal.com profile] james_nicoll also said one of his cats (or one of his friend's) clearly regarded spider webs as delicacies. I'm not eager to try one myself, but I wonder if it is primarily a texture rather than a taste thing.

(I'm also not eager to try eating a house centipede, but given how it looks sort of like shrimp/lobster, I could imagine that maybe it does taste seafood and hence could appeal to cats.)

It's quite a puzzling sight until you figure out what is happening--she sits in the corner staring at the wall and apparently munching on air, occasionally tugging bits of what appears to be nothing free from the wall with her teeth or paws. Once I realized that there was a spiderweb there, the scene made more sense, but still seemed odd.

I suspect that the texture is indeed what draws her--she's the first cat I've ever had who turns her nose up at canned cat food, but adores anything dry and crunchy. (And plastic, of course.)

Oddly enough, she won't eat bugs (which seem like they would fit right in with crunchy food and spiderwebs). Most annoying, because she does insist on playing with them to death, but then she abandons them for me to find, and gives me a look of "What? Would you eat THAT?" when I scold her for leaving them there.

I have come across a series of cat toys that have crinkly stuff underneath the fabric outer covering, so that they crinkle and make noise when handled. I've only seen one of them get chewed through, when my then-roommate's cat decapitated the toy snake. (Since then, I've avoided the toys with narrow necks.) I don't remember the brand, but they were a good portion of the ones hanging on the wall at PetCo.
