Mangatalk: Paneling thought

No real spoilers for Saiyuki book 7 (or 8), but cut Just In case.

Something I thought I'd mention here, since I don't have the time at the moment to investigate much further by myself: last night I was ripping off inspired by Saiyuki paneling when roughing out Project Blue Rose, and poking through Book 8 (er ... was it Book 7? I've now forgotten)* and noticed something. In the scene where Sanzo's over the cliff, there's a page where Gojyo's yelling something about dropping his holy ass. Three pages later, when they're flopped on the ground in exhaustion and Sanzo lights Gojyo's cigarette, the exact same paneling is repeated. I take it to mean we're supposed to see a parallel there - perhaps in Gojyo exerting himself to save Sanzo, and in Sanzo exerting himself to be as grateful to Gojyo as he is capable (which, for Sanzo, is quite the effort. XD).

Thoughts, anyone? And does Minekura do this again, elsewhere, and if so - what is she saying there? If I remember when I get home I'll look as I'm working on PBR.

* Sorry, no page numbers right now - the book's at home. Somewhere in the second half of the book, I think.

I hadn't noticed that exact thing, but I had noticed something else. In book eight Gojyo has his flashback to falling of a cliff and being saved by Jien. I noticed that all of those panels in that short scene are duplicates of panels in the longer cliff scene in book seven, only it's Sanzo falling off the cliff rather than Gojyo, down the positioning of the characters to each other and how they are sitting/standing and how they interact. I keep meaning to do a post about it because it's really lovely.

Forgot to say - for Sanzo, lighting Gojyo's cigarette is a hugely generous act-- almost *friendly* and Gojyo responds to it by flirting even harder with him than before, so Gojyo must've appreciated the gesture.

Heehee. And I note Sanzo being a bitch to Gojyo almost immediately afterwards - god forbid someone think he doesn't completely hate everyone. XD

Yeah, but he's back to normal bitchy, not the guy who decked Gojyo some pages back.

I don't think I've ever told you how much I love that icon. XD

Oh, nice. I'll have to look that up.

I finally got round to making a post about the cliff scenes, mostly because of this post, so I'd thought I'd let you know:

Coolness. XD

The way the door on Gojyo's house is still broken (by Banri) when Hakkai comes home during the Burial arc is almost the same as the way it was broken when he came home after Kanan was taken, if I'm recalling things correctly.

Cool. It's shaping up to look like Minekura uses a lot of repetition to emphasize themse and emotions in this. *files in mental toolbox*

There is one particular panel which is repeated three times in Reload: twice in the "Against the Stream" arc, and once in Gojyo & Hakkai's "Burial" arc. I almost died from joy when I noticed what Minekura was doing there. I meant to actually write it up as a particularly nice example of a unique way in which the comics (sequential art, whatever) medium can be used to tell a story (and create linkages between different parts of the same story), but I will probably never get around to it.

Anyway, I don't want to spam your comments with a big JPEG (at least not without your permission), so here is a link:

The first panel is Sanzo waking up from a dream about Koumyo saving him from the river. The second panel is Kougaiji coming to his senses, after Doku and Yaone show that they're standing by him no matter what (and thus saving him from Ni's clutches). The third panel is Gojyo despairing at his own (supposedly) worthless life, just before Hakkai busts in and demonstrates that somebody does, in fact, care if he lives or dies.

Nice -- all about coming to yourself and waking to another way of thought - which fits in with a "Burial" theme, most likely. I'm not sure about themes in Reload, though - I've read through whatever chapter I've got of Reload (*checks* - ah, ch. 22), but I don't grok it in the same way that I grok the first series. It'll probably take holding it in my hands and reading it that way to really catch themes and parallels.

Thanks! XD
