Hee!

I've been using the Gmail "Tea House" theme for years, and never witnessed this Easter egg. XD

Ah ha ha, HOPPING FOX VAMPIRES, awesomesauce! How have I never caught that one either? I run into the visiting fox-ghosts who clear off the offering plate all the time...

I've seen the fox-ghosts, but I guess I've never been in Gmail at 3:14 AM. XD

I heard about that years ago, but am not a gmail user. There's a page on the web somewhere with a complete set of the images and a thorough explanation. I really like the idea of incorporating folklore easter eggs into a widely-used program like that.

Also, foxes!!!!111!!

Here's a better page

This isn't the one that I saw that broke the whole thing down, though. I think the fox is sleeping under a blanket, not hiding.

There are a whole *lot* of benighted-traveler-stops-at-haunted-house ghost stories in Japanese, I know I've seen a lot of print series dealing with that structure. The nice young man is seduced by his charming lady-hostess, who turns into a monster because she's a demon or ghost, who turns into seven demons, and then the DEMONS come, kind of thing, where it all vanishes except the body of the beheaded woman in the morning. Sometimes that arc gets worked into a bigger story, because everybody likes that kind of story so much!

Usagi Yojimbo did it once. Tomoe had to save him.

I think the fox ghosts are actually playing Go with the middle fox ghost mediating. They have the Go cups and that's totally a board with little black and white pieces.

... I feel unobservant now, but that's a really cool easter egg.

OMG HOPPING GHOSTS

[identity profile] readsalot.livejournal.com 2011-01-13 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, i read about that a long time ago, but I've never been awake at 3:14 to see it. Most of the Google-created Gmail themes have some sort of easter egg, and I think they're all at 3:14 because of pi.

So cute! I just changed my theme to that one. I'd never seen it before, but it's adorable.
