The backstory didn't work for me because Wonka is supposed to be a cipher. Ah well. If there hadn't been a book at all, the movie just spraing out of nowhere, I wouldn't have such an objection to it.
Of course the real question is: are we ever going to get to see Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator on the silver screen?
I think they wanted some more to it, as I understand it. I felt it worked (much to my surprise), but they overdid it/dragged it out a bit. I could have gone with it either way.
I hope we see the sequel, it may well depend on how well this film does.
