Augh!

The strawberry plant with which I'd replaced the one I killed had produced a very tiny strawberry that I was watching ripen in secret, and I was going to pick it and present it to [livejournal.com profile] myrialux today as a surprise...

...and it was eaten by pillbugs! Augh! *goes to google how to discourage pillbugs*

My Two year old self says to load your pillbugs into your tonka truck and drive them off the nearest high surface.

If only I could! XD I've found that diatomaceous earth sprinkled around plants will discourage them, so I'm going to try that. There's another strawberry ripening!

Diatomaceous earth discourages any non-flying insect. The stuff clogs the air spicules in their exoskeleton, so they can't breathe.

...ooh, I named an LJ after diatomaceous earth! Shortly after our first indian meal moth infestation. Hideous little bastards.

I'm reminded of an allegedly true story of how someone saw an ad for a 100% effective way to kill pests and sent for it. He received two wooden blocks with the instructions to place one block down, a bug on the block, and then to raise the other block high....

I've never seen pillbugs actually climbing a plant; I always thought they just ate... dirt? Possibly shadows or hope?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently they mostly eat decaying plant matter and your SOUL, but love strawberries and melon. Mentioned specifically.

It's so frustrating when you've got a nice crop of something going and it gets nommed by pests. A couple years ago I had a lovely batch of radishes growing, but they were wiped out by cabbagewoms. Arg! Stupid bugs! I hope you manage to find a way to get rid of the pillbugs.

Those bugs (we call them roly polys) are really, really bad this year. In the past, they only ate dirt, but this year, they've decimated several plants. Including ALL of my squash. Never happened before. *frowns*

I've seen a lot of them here, but since I haven't lived in a house in a good long while, I had no way of telling if they were in normal numbers or bad numbers.

But now they're eating my strawberries, they're definitely bad numbers!

[identity profile] seawolf10.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they're out in abnormal numbers this year.

While I'm thinking about it, did you get to meet Ursula Vernon at A-Kon?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yup - found her table right before that half of the artist alley closed, talked with her a bit, and bought a few prints. :)

So someone at work says orange oil helps to keep bugs away. Also this reminded me of a time when my mother was growing tomatoes in our yard and was horrified to discover punctures in them when they were ripe. She couldn't figure out if it was a bird, or a worm or what. Then one day I caught my Dobie attempting to pull the red shiny fruit off the vines. Teeth marks! :)

Hee! XD
